Windlass

Hello,

Can anyone help identify this windlass, there are no identification plates or manufacturers insignias. It has raise function only, its lowered by releasing the dog and opening the slipping clutch.

Might be an old Ideal windlass.

Its old and heavy. If you are having trouble with it taking it to a starter and alternator rebuilder might be able to fix it, if it's the motor at least. Clutches and dogs and such will probably be a problem.

I don't know but it has the look of a Muir, an old one.
Likely it is, or nearly so, as old as your boat. It might be worthwhile sending a photo to some of the windlass mfgrs.
They might recognize it.

I too thought it was an Ideal, but the ones I've seen have their name pressed into the cover. I also think their covers are one-piece and lift off vs this one that is split in halves.

I'd guess that if you emailed your pics to the following email address, they would know ---- perhaps even have parts for you (they state that 99% of the parts for Ideal Windlasses produced since WWII are still available - impressive!).

Thanks for taking the time to reply, in the end I found out that its a Nilsson Windlass from New Zealand.

Send the pics to RC Plath in Portland OR. and give them a call. They repair windlasses as well as make them, so they could have a clue. What kind of motor does it have?
