The air intake on my Westerbeke 8.0BTD is shown in the pictures. As you can see there is no filter at all. What should be there?

Mine has a sized foam insert. Clean it every few years with soap and water. Seems pretty clean so not much crud or dust in our ER air.

Lots of gennies have no air filter. Really no need. That box is really a silencer for air intake noise (quite loud), and as a silencer it is pretty lame. I have fitted Donaldson filter/silencers from like Bobcats and they do a nice job. Amazing how much noise comes out of a gennie air intake.

Good point Ski. My Westerbeke parts book refers to the foam filter as a sound suppressor.
