Trip planning Annapolis to Newport RI

[Perfect Fit]

We are planning a trip this summer from Annapolis to Newport this summer. Any suggestions on places to anchor/moore on the way up that might be good protected spots?

Thinking of overnighting in Manasquan N J on the way north. Any favorite marinas? Our boat is a 2000 48' Sabreline Aft Cabin trawler.

How fast will you go? I made it in two days from Baltimore to Port Jefferson at 15 kts. We stopped in Atlantic City the first night and stayed in Farley Marina but there is a nice anchorage on the opposite side of the inlet.

You can take a free mooring in Manhasset and there are lots of anchorages on both sides of LI Sound heading up to Newport as you will probably make one more stop on the way assuming you can do 15 kts.


Specify the distance traveled each day and we can figure out nice anchorages to fit.

NJ is not as scary as many people make it out to be.


Do some internet surfing and see what the internet says is fun in NJ to your liking.


What many say is an impassible ICW or lack of passible inlets is not all true. In the summer, conditions allow various inlet passing easily, locals to follow and lots of activity and stops along the waterways.

The bight at Chesapeake City, roughly midway across the C&D Canal and south side, is a good anchorage. Or there's a free city dock in there, if it happens to be available when you arrive.

Has anyone done Cape May -> Newport direct? Anything special beyond watching for traffic transiting to NYC?

In the dead of summer there are numerous fishing boats both recreational and commercial 0-70 miles out...plus a steady stream of large vessels/tug & tows.


Other than that it's usually uneventful with the absence of tropical weather.

Is the goal to make the trip quickly, i.e. the goal is to get there? Or are you cruising and looking for an interesting trip? Those would produce very different agenda.

Exactly. We sometimes took as much as a month to get from Baltimore to RI. Great cruising grounds, and our preference was to anchor out or grab a mooring as much as possible. Waterway Guide Northern is a great planning tool. Lots of good anchorages between Annapolis and Cape May, all depends on what your pace and cruising style is.
