MC Boat Registration

A sailboat just pulled into the slip beside us with a state registration number starting with MC!

Of course there is no state abbreviation MC so I had to Google. Seems the boat registration for Michigan is MC not MI.

Not sure why, perhaps because of potential confusion with the 1? But since it is always the first two letters I can't see how that would be confusing?

It has always been MC here, don’t know what the rational was but MC it is.

FWIW, Washington State's boat registration numbers all start with WN rather than WA.

Wifey B: Actually the boat stuff came from The Federal Boating Act of 1958 and the Post Office was late on it's delivery not making it until 1963. There are 8 or 9 states different. So, now the question is why the PO had to be different.
