My wife and I are going to sell our 1972 Grand Banks Alaskan 49. She's been well cared for, and we love her, but we're wanting to get a sailboat that we can do some longer distance cruising in.

Work done or parts added in Sept-Nov 2016 (accomplished by Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-Op):
Lifeline 8d batteries (x6),
160 amp balmar alternators (x2) with external regulator.
New blue Seas panel
New wiring through out (removed all the old retired in place stuff too)
LED lighting in engine room
Removed complete coolant system from both engines cleaned/repaired/reinstalled.
all new sound dampening and wood trim throughout engine room.
Hull painted with Brightsides (Blue Glow white)
New seam compound in a significant portion of the topsides.
Repositioned engine thru-hulls for better access.
Fresh bottom paint
Much of the existing waterlines were replaced with PEX tubing.



She also had a significant rebuild in 2010-2012 (by Sunnfjord Yachts), at that time the following was added:
Electric heads,
Twin ford 2715E engines (~1100 hours on them now) With all new fiberglass exhaust.
Onan 9.5 Generator (~300 hours I think now)
all horizontal surfaces have fiberglass on them; no teak decks.
Diamond Seaglaze windows and doors
LED lighting in Saloon and Pilothouse
Raymarine e12 with open array radar
Galleymaid windlass (I added a 105lbs Mantus Anchor last summer).
Custom radar tower and windlass box.
New Aluminum Fuel and Stainless Water tanks
New water system (heater, pump, accumulator tank, etc)
New Upholstery
New Headliner
New Props/Shafts/Couplings/Cutlass Bearings and PYI dripless shaft seals.


In April I installed a Steelhead Marine 600lbs electric-hydraulic davit.


Those are definitely only partial lists.. It's actually really hard to think of everything that's been done off the top of my head haha. Anyway, the pilot house was painted last spring and the bulwarks and cabin sides were painted this month. We're currently working on refinishing the brightwork.


When I added the Davit, I bought a new Highfield 310AL and a 2012 Suzuki 15hp. I wasn't planning on selling this with the boat, but I might reconsider with the right offer.


She is currently kept in a covered slip. We also have a full canvas cover that extends nearly to the waterline.


Asking $190k. Located in Port Orchard, Washington. We may also consider trade for a center cockpit Sailboat in the 45-50' range.

Art Defever designed the Alaskan 46, but another guy drew the lines of the 49. He essentially just stretched the 46 into the 49, so in a round about way, the 49 is a Defever design.
 
Beautiful beyond words. That boat seems flawless.
 
Yes, she's wood. Yakal frames with mohagany planks and bronze screws. All horizontal surfaces have fiberglass overlay. No real decks.

When you say she is wood, do you mean a wood hull ? And has it been fiberglassed in ?
 
She has a traditional carvel planked hull. Only the horizontal surfaces (which are made of marine plywood) have fiberglass over them to cut down on maintenance. You wouldn't want fiberglass over the planking on the hull; since the planks tend to work while the boat is underway, the fiberglass would delaminate from the planks if you tried to cover them.
 
She's beautiful. Someone will be very fortunate to bet her master. We have an Alaskan 46 the Defever and Fleming cut there teeth on and we love her. Best of luck.
 
One other thing I forgot to mention we had done when she was out of the water in the fall was having new rudder post supports fabricated.


Also, To get a little more traffic for the boat, we're starting to think about listing her with a broker. I'd really rather not waste the 10% on a broker, so if someone out there is kicking around the idea of getting more info on our boat, please start a dialogue with us. I think Monday we're going to start looking for a broker we like.
 
Doing my bit to push the Korean trolls who invaded TF off the recent posts list.

Great boat. I know there are some that would take on an old woodie, but I never would for a number of reasons. But I do hope you can get a good price, you have obviously invested much time., love and money. She deserves another owner who will carry on and get the same pleasure as a result.
 
Our boat is still available so I made a little video of her exterior. I may make an interior video walkthrough at some point, but I haven't had a chance yet.

 
OK, I'm in love. Too bad my marina recently decided to no longer accept any wooden boats. Beautiful boat!
 
Time to change marinas especially if they would turn down a fine vessel.
 
Blinkerfluid, I think I saw your boat at Port Orchard. We were visiting the owners of the Ocean Alexander MK1 50 near you (who are now new boat friends of ours).

Your is a very nice looking boat with lines you fall in love with!

A quick question: Did you make the video yourself? If so, very impressive! I'd love to learn how to do that.

Yep, that would be our boat you saw. We've since moved her to the yachtclub, so you won't see her at the marina anymore, but she's still nearby.

The video was a team effort between me and a friend. I took all the footage and he did most of the editing with some input from me.
 
That's a BEAUTIFUL Boat, great video too!
