Because of the added thickness of the bowsprit ( 3" ) + ( deck is 2" btw ) the drive shaft on my new Quick 1500 W windlass is about 3" too short, When mounted topside, the shaft is just short of connecting with the gear drive below. If there are any machinists out there, would you opt to make a whole new longer shaft OR just a keyed coupling c/w new shaft extension and couple to the existing ... ? If that were the case, the existing shaft would have to be cut back to allow for the new coupling a proper overlap ... I think .. ? Anyone done something like this .. ?

A coupling will allow EZ replacement , or rebedding.

Just having my windlass apart multiple times and playing with all its components, I would say a coupling would be fine if it could be fitted. It is such a slow turning mechanism.

I would even entertain a shock absorbing coupling to reduce gear shock loading...but unless easily, cheaply done...wouldn't worry about it.
