    Are paper charts still relevant?

Never leave to dock without them We find paper charts to be extremely helpful and always have them at the helm we're captaining from. Great perspective vs chart plotter only.

Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina formerly Key West Harbor Marina

Hi Boathealer, Are your talking about Stock Island Marina Village? We couldn't get in there. I think this place only has one pool and is much smaller.

Barrier Coat - Bottom Clean Enough?

Having bottom blasted followed by barrier coat and then paint; 3 coats of each. Yard says bottom is clean enough to barrier coat but to me looks like they have not removed all the paint. My understanding is all paint must be removed prior to applying barrier coat. Am I correct? What is your...

    Ford Lehman vs Cat 3208

3208NA Going Strong Avalon's 3208NA's are approaching 4000 hrs and we have had no real issues over the last 8 years and 1650 hrs. This will be their 29th season and I expect many more. We routinely run them in the 1500 RPM range for hours on end with no issues with carbon build up or smoke...

Black Creek off St Johns South of Jacksonville FL

Thanks Dan - very helpful link Looks like many many areas would be significantly impacted by Cat3+ storms. Even CAT 1 and 2 seem to present significant risks for many areas. Is that the threat most folks live under with properties / slips that are near the coast line? It looks like unless you...

Black Creek off St Johns South of Jacksonville FL

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We're looking at a home on the lower part of Black Creek. Home has never flooded but water did come over property during Irma but no damage and 1st time in 20+ years creek breached bulkhead. Although flooding only occurred once it is concerning.

Considering property purchase and would like to learn more about the creek and area boating environment. Is the creek a busy high wake environment, is annual flooding a concern, really looking to get a...

    GrandBanks Liveaboard Adventure

Yes much maintenance but love the boat We purchased our 1990 hull 91 GB 46 in 2011. We love the boat but she does require a significant amount of topside maintenance. In addition as a 1990 you will have on going system maintenance / upgrades but that comes with most boats of that vintage.

    Refrigerator/Freezer Replacement on GB 42

Sea Frost - Very Happy We replaced the Grunert system in our 1990 GB 46 in 2012 with three separate systems from Sea Frost, 2 refrigerators and 1 freezer. One of the best upgrades we've done on Avalon and we've done many upgrades. The 3 compressors take up less than half the space the Grunert...

    Frigomar Air Conditioning

    Frigomar Air Conditioning

Looking to upgrade the 3 late 90's vintage Marine Air sAC units aboard Avalon. We currently have a split 16k BTU in the saloon and self contained 12k units in the forward and aft cabins. Came across Frigomar online and they look interesting but I really can't find much info on them other than...

    Headliner Replacement - Vinyl Beadboard?

Large Rip Hi RT A large rip was put in the headliner and unfortunately its 1 piece about 11' x 14'. Original thought was to replace with same but not a lot of options as it was stitched into one large piece. Would also be nice to have a system that allowed access to area above when needed for...

    Headliner Replacement - Vinyl Beadboard?

We need to replace the stretched fabric head liner in our GB 46 saloon. Vinyl beadboard with teak batten strips has been recommended. We've done a lot of searching and reading on material options and do like the white with teak look but are unsure of the actual headliner material. We have some...

Leverage New Bow Thruster Batteries for Windlass & Washdown Pump

Pulling boat with windlass No...would never pull the boat with windlass. Actually the only time windlass is loaded with more than just chain at depth is when breaking our anchor free. Tim

Leverage New Bow Thruster Batteries for Windlass & Washdown Pump

Shut Down Electronics SeeVee, I agree with shutting down electronics prior to anchoring, its our current practice as I don't want to risk damaging MFD memory. However, it's a hassle with two stations and sometimes we're anchoring in areas where I really want access to the chart while we set anchor.

Leverage New Bow Thruster Batteries for Windlass & Washdown Pump

Service 12v System caltexflanc - Servicing the current 12v system, motor, makes sense but I'm attracted to removing the significant power draw of windlass from the 12v house system. I've been through all the connections and all are tight and free of corrosion. The windlass is 28 years old but...

Leverage New Bow Thruster Batteries for Windlass & Washdown Pump

Since we will be installing a 24v bow thruster I’m hoping to make two additional improvement to Avalon’s systems using the new 24v battery bank. We’ve occasionally had the windlass draw down the 12v house system to a level low enough to cause our Furuno TZT MFD screens to shut down – a...

Bow Thruster - On/Off or Variable Power

2nd Opinion Thanks Ted - great advice. Our vessels are likely very similar so your experience with size and actual use is invaluable. I'll also post the question on the GB forum so I can get specifics on other 46's with thrusters installed. I'm in the process of getting a 3rd quote right now...
