    Escape from the Lakes

Thanks BandB. I was not aware of this. Matt Approaching the Portage Canal, Lake Superior.

    Escape from the Lakes

Air draft is 28’, 19’ with mast folded. With mast down we can get out via Oswego and Erie rather than St Lawrence. We want to do the “Downeast” Loop via the St Lawrence, but not enough time this year.

    Escape from the Lakes

We plan to leave from the Apostle Islands this Monday and make our way back to Rhode Island via the North channel, then scoot for the Oswego and Erie Canal. Rough itinerary is Soo locks week of 27 July, North Channel 10 August, Lake St Claire 17 August, Welland Canal 24 August, Oswego Canal 31...

    Dock box rivet size?

Does anyone know the size of the rivets used in the common dock box? I don’t know the brand but the rivets look the same in most I’ve seen. They are bigger than anything my West Marine carries (I was able to compare with the in-store dock box).

    Which multimeter?

I need to pick up a reliable multimeter for general marine use. I believe I want auto ranging and an amp clamp. Recommendations?

    Nav programs for Macbook

TZ = Time Zero. I believe it evolved out of Nobeltec. I haven’t used it but it seems pretty robust as far as features.

    Nav programs for Macbook

My Del laptop is getting long in the tooth. Morgan’s Cloud site makes a good case for running TZ Navigator on a Mac using a windows environment via boot camp. TZ Navigator is a very robust program, but I’m wondering if there is a similar Nav program that will run in the Mac environment?

    Canadian safety equipment requirements

The Boat U.S. site lists some pretty rigorous safety equipment requirements for Canada (including a fire axe). Canadian Coast Guard Requirements - BoatTECH - BoatUS I was planning to pass in and out of Canada for brief periods on my way out of the Great Lakes. Will they hassle a U.S. boat not...

    Engine Choices

Generally agree with everything mentioned. There are some lobstermen that swear by their Volvos. 6bta is a great engine and Cummins remans are a great deal. There was one of the bigger Yanmars that had head issues - Well documented on boatdiesel. Avoid peninsulars if there are any left out there.

    Great Lakes navigation guides

We plan to spend much of the summer on the lakes. Probably transit out the end of August.

    Great Lakes navigation guides

I need to transit the Great Lakes from Lake Superior to East Coast. Preferable via Hudson River, if not, then Gulf of St Lawrence. Nordhavn 46 with 5’5” draft, 27’ air draft mast up and 19’ mast down. From what I can find on line, I might be able to transit the Oswego to Erie Canal route mast...

    Home port choices

I'm in the same situation. Just retired and a Rhode Island resident, but planning to sell the house here and travel on the boat I'm in the process of buying. I plan to initially document and register (yes, RI requires registration sticker in addition to documentation) in RI and will not have a...

    Wisconsin surveyors

I’m looking for recommendations to get a survey done in Bayfield Wisconsin in the next few weeks. I have a good local surveyor, but flying him out is going to be expensive. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Boating 201

Thanks. That’s the challenge with many of us on this board I suspect. We hit that intermediate plateau in our learning curve. There’s a lot I don’t know and even more I’ve forgot (the more obscure lights/sound signals etc. that require brute memorization). I’ll keep an eye out for the USPS...

    Found my trawler

Groton. Sub base or Gales Ferry marina? Great cruising grounds at your doorstep and the Nt32 is an ideal New England boat to do it in! Congratulations.

    Boating 201

I’d like to take a boating course that would not waste my time and provide useful knowledge and hopefully provide fringe benefits such as insurance reduction. I took the USCG Aux basic course ages ago, have a dozen plus years navigating a 35’ boat from NY to Maine. I’m not concerned about cost...

    West Coast U.S. Cruising

Follow up question: do most marinas in the Seattle Bay Area keep their water running in the winter?

    West Coast U.S. Cruising

East coast cruiser here. Thinking of the possibility of buying a boat like a Nordic Tug 37 on the west coast, full time cruising for a few years and shipping back to the east coast afterwards. Seattle and the inside passage are very interesting, but transiting south seems a bit more challenging...

Newport RI in May, Volvo Ocean Race Restart

Mackerel Cove on the East side of Jamestown is another anchoring option. Navy Base Marina is a cheaper option for retired military. P.M. me if you need any transport, etc., We're in Middletown. Matt

    East Coast Cruising range requirements

Thanks all. Current boat is very basic. No generator, etc. Budget doesn't allow for new builds, architects, etc. I could maybe stretch to $300K for the retirement boat but would prefer to put the money into cruising - but not if I'm going to feel restricted in destinations. I know Cuba will...

    East Coast Cruising range requirements

Thanks Marty. Current boat has ~600mi safe range. I'm trying to come up with requirements for the retirement boat.

    East Coast Cruising range requirements

What would be considered a desirable cruising range for a boat intended to cover East coast cruising grounds: Canadian Maritime Provinces to Caribbean Islands/Cuba? Goal would be to be able to avoid questionable quality fuel, but not necessarily ability to make a round trip to avoid higher prices.

East to West Coast Range Requirements

Thanks for the info. My current boat is a 35' Duffy Downeast cruiser. Say 200 gallons useable fuel and 1.2 nm per gallon at 13 kts or 3.5 nmpg at 7 kts. Would you consider a boat like this up to the trip?
