    Bolt Cutters

Not sure if you've ever tried to cut 3/8" BBB chain with a bolt cutter before, but it's pretty difficult with a good set of cutters on level ground. I have a D-clevis finger tight and a pelican hook (like shown in picture). It allows anyone to pull a short lanyard and release the bitter end...

    New things for the boat!!!

I watched a couple of guys walk an anchor chain down the dock one day that must have been 500' worth. They ended up using 3 dock carts. :) Too heavy for a single dock cart, they just got three guys moving together. Pretty clever when I got to thinking about it. Each probably had 200# in the...

    Is a Sedan/Europa a Good Option?

My boat has been holding herself afloat for 34 years now. Her hull was being laid about the time I l graduated High School. That says something for older boats.

Quadcopter video from our Gulf Islands trip

FAA doesn't have jurisdiction below 500' in most scenarios. They do in control areas around airports and such. I follow this very closely and am both a certified pilot and an avid RC modeler. There are currently rules in place that govern model airplanes and those just need to be adhered to...

Quadcopter video from our Gulf Islands trip

I've been flying them for a couple of years now and you're right... not all are disrespectful idiots.

Quadcopter video from our Gulf Islands trip

On my 550 I just Toggle the AIL switch On and Off 3-4 times (confirmed Home point recording by burst of green flashes). That'll set a new "home"

You can also re-set the "home" location while in flight. That may help you get past the 2000' limitation on the Phantoms. I have a F-550 hexacopter. I'd be worried about it's inability to float. :)

    Is a Sedan/Europa a Good Option?

I single-hand all the time. Most dockings are all but single for the most part. The wife snags a cleat here and there is about all. Europa's keep you dry and out of the weather. They have great visibility from port, starboard and forward. Open the doors and walk out to either side to get...

    lehman injector pump

Unless they over-fueled the timing so bad it washed the rings and scored the cylinders/pistons. That was often a problem with injected gas motors used in performance applications back in the day, but that was a long time ago. Maybe it was struggling and they just kept pushing it?

    Any Regrets?

I think financially living aboard is a difficult case to close. Real property appreciates. If you are renting a slip you're even further in a depreciation spiral. That being said, waterfront property appreciates even faster, so if you own your slip, and it's paying for itself from the savings...

    A question about [maritime] pilots...

On an aircraft carrier, the pilot is announced to the bridge crew when he comes aboard and with his ETA to the bridge. Once he reaches the bridge, he will be in-briefed by the Navigator in the CO's presence. Any hazards, changes to the Nav plan, Anchoring plan etc are discussed and then at the...

    Help! Plumbing and wiring re-route

Weird that we have EXACTLY the same boat (year & model) and yet so different. :) Mine has parquet flooring and TWO hatches. One about where you are, and another at the foot of the master bunk. I can get my 6' 1" 230# bulk into both and close the hatch. It looks like your bilge is much...

Treatment for black plastic rub strip?

A damp rag w/acetone will bring it back to black and then treat with Armor All to keep it that way.

    Open Array vs Dome?

All infrared is pretty severely affected by moisture and rendered nearly useless quickly in tropical rain. Blackbody radiation is really negatively affected by warm, wet moisture (fog). I used to operate a FLIR on P-3's in the Navy and when we'd operate down south the tropical rains put me out...

Did your boat come with an owner's manual?

The original owner of our boat built a very extensive owner's manual that I'm in the process of updating now. It was all hand-typed with polaroid pictures for illustrations. I'm in the process of updating it and making it an electronic document now.

    Sewing Machine

I have a servo on mine as well as a 3:1 reduction. It was modded for sewing holster leather before I bought it. It's a fun machine for sure. It'll sew over 1/2" of elk hide, plywood, ABS and Maralon (Lexan) with ease. Definitely gotta watch your fingers though. It's unmerciful.

I have a Pfaff 545 as well. They don't get much more bullet proof. :) I use nothing but Tenara (GoreTex) thread these days.

Which Class B AIS do you have?

I don't buy the clutter myth either. Just like terminal control areas for planes, controllers weren't overwhelmed by aircraft with transponders. It might get crowded at higher range rates, but knowing who's out there, how fast they're moving and where they're headed is incredibly valuable in...

Weather hold in Puget sound or not?

The other part of this one is how much fun will you have on a trip to PT on a windy / wet weekend. Boat Haven can be a bear to get alongside in the wind as well. PT is a great town to visit, but I'd save the fuel and time for a better weekend. It's really hit and miss at this time of year.

    Steel fuel tank age survey

Mine are 34 years old and when I had them open this fall for inspection and polishing, they were in good shape. No leaks or major rust.
