    Diesel tank leak

If the tank is steel covered with fiberglass, the method that I used to repair my black iron fuel tank may be of interest. You can see it on my Youtube channel at: I re-filled the tank this winter and no leaks.

    Diesel tank leak

I would not cut the hull sides to remove a fiberglass tank. If the tank can't be sealed from the inside, cut the tank up to remove it in pieces. Replace with a tank or tanks that can fit through the engine room access points. But it should be possible to fiberglass the inside of the tank. Work...

    Hudson River Lake Champlain cruise

I second the suggestion to time your passage to the current in the Hudson. Makes a big difference whether you are fighting the current or letting it push you along. I found the "Tidal Currents Trip Planner" app very helpful.

Chasing air in fuel line two years

I had a problem with air in the fuel line to my single Cummins V470M. Caused serious pulsation. You may be interested in my video on YouTube that explains how I finally solved the problem. You can see it at: . Actually, I never knew exactly what fix was the one that worked, but my air trap both...

    Black Water Pump Out Dilemma

I have had two similar experiences. The first was caused by a poor seal where the hose from the tank connects to the deck fitting. The second was caused by the top of the tank (an RV tank on a boat) caving in enough to allow the pump-out pipe (which was fastened to the top of the tank) to sit on...

    Friday ponder...

I would never advise anyone to buy a cheap old beater of a boat, depending, perhaps, on your definition of "cheap old beater." In my experience, repairs and improvements will cost more than the higher price of a boat that has already had the repairs and improvements made. I'm glad that I did...

ICW Massachusetts to Florida in winter months

I left from RI on November 3, 2013. Battled bad fuel issues until reaching Atlantic Yacht Basin in Chesapeake, VA on Nov 21. Left Chesapeake, VA on January 20, 2014 headed for Melbourne, FL. Jan 27 was the night the big snow storm hit the SE states, leaving school children in Atlanta stranded on...

    Now What?

Rule 19 (d) states that: " A vessel which detects by radar alone the presence of another vessel shall determine if a close-quarters situation is developing and/or risk of collision exists. If so, she shall take avoiding action in ample time, provided that when such action consists of an...

Does a trawler have weather and motion issues like a sailboat?

When I was boat shopping in 2008-10, with my wife and I both age 65, I looked at motor-sailors, thinking they might be a good compromise, and not caring about racing. Having done very little sailing, the first thing that turned me off was "too many strings," as one friend put it. The side decks...

    Dehumidifier good or bad idea?

I have run a dehumidifier (set at 50%) in the aft stateroom during summer lay-up in FL for at least six years. The dehumidifier drains into the bilge. When the boat was in the water all summer, I relied on the bilge pumps to remove the water. With the boat on the hard, I remove the garboard plug...

Name the one thing you dislike about your boat

I'd like to have a windlass with switches on the fly-bridge and at the lower helm, rather than the vertical capstan with foot switch that I have. I would also like to have longer biminis for more shade.

    Hose and water

I have multiple precautionary systems to avoid sinking the boat if a water line fails. Pressure regulator, timer that shuts the dock water off after 2 hours or less if I forget, a shutoff that is activated when more than 200 gallons flows through it. But I also try to remember to shut the dock...

How often do you need your lower helm?

Lower Helm or Fly-bridge I like having both. I don't want my fly-bridge enclosed so that I can get all the available air when it is hot and stuffy. So I like having the lower helm when the weather is unpleasant. Richard Allen 42 Bristol LRC

    Choosing a hard dinghy

I'm surprised that Pete's 8 or 9' aluminum boat won't plane with two people with 9hp. I am using a 12' Porta Bote with 2' cut off the bow to fit across my transom. It planes at speeds of 8-10 knots with me and my wife on board and powered by a 4hp Mariner. I have been happy with the Porta Bote...

Decisions Decisions, on a first trawler

34' Too Small In my opinion, 34' trawlers are generally too small, especially for a family of four. When I was searching for a trawler I found that the engine room access in 34's was particularly difficult. I ended up at 42' and have been glad for the extra room. I will say I was very happy...

How do you tie up in the locks?

Erie Canal Lock tie up I seldom use the slimy lines hanging down from the top of the lock walls on the Erie Canal. The methods that I find easiest are the following: 1. From a midship cleat, run a line around a recessed pipe in the lock wall and back to the cleat. One line that slides up and...
