I prefer my Consew RB-265 over a sailright. Started out with a Singer 111.

    Alwood Application Process?

I love the stuff. I sand to 120, vacuum, clean, Prime, let it set for 6 to 8 hours pending the temps. First coat of clear goes on, I don’t sand the primer coat, no reducer. I then let it sit for 24 hours. Sand with 220 very light, don’t bust through the first coat. Then apply one coat in the...

    New Swim Step

It’s been a long road. I originally obtained the teak about 3 years ago. Believe it or not it was reclaimed out of an old barn. Apparently they used teak for the hay loft floor. 1”x5”x20’ boards. I ripped them down to 1-3/4 strips. Built a buck and used stainless (don’t remember the grade...

    Swim Platform Refurbishment Ideas

I’ve restored one that was in ok shape on my last boat. Lots of work but turned out nice. Currently I am building a new one for the current boat. I don’t recommend this unless you have some skills. Cost for teak is very high! If I was to start over, I would have a glass one made by a pro.

    Varnish, first time...

Im taking a new on-line class for varnish. So far this class would have saved me 100’s of hours of my prior trial & errors. https://danleeboatbuilding.co.uk/yacht-varnishing-course-to-study-online/

    DC-182 solenoid problems

I contacted Lewmar… no return. I contacted EV drives, and it looks like the unit I bought as a replacement is not the correct unit. So … my fault again. “ Hi Ron, The unit you bought from us was not designed for a bow thruster but for use on a golf cart. The bow thruster coils are rated to...

    DC-182 solenoid problems

We have a lewmar 24v bow truster in the boat. When we bought the boat the bow truster did not work. After replacing the block box and the DC-182 dual reversing solenoid it worked again! Fast forward one year and the DC-182 welded itself together again. I blame this failure on myself. Bad...

To Repair or Sell Grand Banks 36 Classic

My .02 cents. (Internet guessing is fun) This is where I would start. Check the oil, does it still have oil, does it smell burnt or is it jet-black? If there is no oil, or if its burnt and jet black... it’s going to need a rebuild again. If No then.. It could a blown head gasket (my number...

    Varnish, first time...

You are probably right, only reason I shyed away from it was it scratches easy. Kids, Dogs, and grumpy old men are hard on things. I was thinking one of the two part systems would be thougher, and last two-three years before needing a sanding and another coat to refresh.

    Varnish, first time...

Well: I re-varnished about 1/2 of the boat last summer. I swapped to interlux Perfection Plus. It looked good, was nice and hard (no dog/people scratches) over the summer. But a good portion lifted. I am not sure how or why it happend. Everything was done the same, but one section on the...

Replacing teak frames with true frameless windows

https://www.seamac.co.nz/frameless-windows/ This is the route I was thinking about going. I have plastic side windows now, they lasted about 5 years and now your cant see through them. They have been polished several times, but they are UV damaged from the inside.

    What size water heater?

We are looking into replacing our 20 gallon tank. Currently its a standard home unit and the outside is rusting. The PO said he put it in 10 years ago. It had a fancy marine unit that would take heat off of a main or the generator. His thought was " no way I will run a detriot to make hot...

    More boats

So last year I had a friend ask me to sell his Aluminum Big Block river runner. It was a little beat up and been in storage for 8 years. I got it cleaned up, services and sold. The PO was not a good people person and prefered not to show the boat, so he cut me in on 20% and it worked for...
