    Alternative to varnish

I stripped down mine and put on 4 coats of West System with 207 special hardner. You can do all the coats in one day. Then I put on perfection plus - a two part 'varnish' and it has lasted for 4 years with NO work at all! It is fading and needs to be sanded and another couple of coats put on but...

    Tool Set Recommendations?

Good tools are better than so-so tools I use bags to hold my tools but I also go from boat to boat. If I had just one boat I would think differently. But I do like tools stored in a way that makes it obvious if part of a 'set' is missing - from sockets to wrenches to screw drivers. Also, I...

Hello, I Might Get a Trawler

You have lots of options and you will have to balance what you need vs what you can find and afford. A sailboat is probably cheaper for a place to live. Without liveaboard status you can only stay something like three days a week. Some people get two cheaper boats and go between them. I'd say...

    Washing Salt Off Boat

Just fresh water to remove salt. Bleach might make sense for a boat with fish guts and blood on the decks salt will wash off with fresh water. In the days of wooden boats the old timers would actually ADD salt to help stop the rot that freshwater can cause.

    Bow Thruster Stops Working

The important part of this to me is learning how to control the boat without the thruster. It only makes sense to 'play' a little with the prop walk and to practice handling the boat with just the engine. Additionally I would get the boat into some wind and put her in neutral and see how she...

    MOLD / black -white

Fresh air is good for most things including people and boats. Twice a year I also really crank the heat up on the boat. I try to do when I'll appreciate the heat the most (a day when I have to get into cold water to work on something, after a week of damp rainy weather etc). I'll leave the...

Why Move from Sailboat to Trawler?

I spent 6 months a year for several years running sailing charters in the Caribbean on a 34 sailboat without a running engine. Constant steady wind and during the Christmas Winds (that usually came in early Jan during my time) I was the only boat that left the bay. In SF bay I sail and live on...

Vandalism, or just people being rude?

Wow! When we feel like our rights are being disrespected we get touchy. It should be a universal given that everyone gets treated decently and respectfully even if we have different religions, skin colors etc etc. Unfortunately we are lucky to have that expectation. What is pretty cool though...

    REAL problem!

A broken down house in a vibrant city - a 'cheap' house - still costs far more than a 'nice' house in a distant location. The fact is that WAGES are NOT what causes prices to be so high. Exorbitant profits are what cause high prices. But so what?? We all need to be responsible for the...

    REAL problem!

I think the takeaway is that we should all work to limit pollution in all its forms. No matter your religion or politics we all need to be responsible for our waste. I would be, well, maybe not totally okay but at least feel better about buying cheaper foreign made products if I knew the...

    Sundeck Trawler

I don't see any issues with getting aboard or limited access on our sundeck trawler. Handling the lines is easy for me but I don't have any canvass except in the flybridge. We have cabin access on both sides of the boat which makes groceries etc pretty easy. The first thing is just to go...

Diesel in SS water tank. Now what?

If I remember you had something like over 40 gallons of fuel go in there...I bet they can save most of that fuel though that is the least of your worries. Good luck and keep the pictures coming! I'd like to hear the deets on progress.

Diesel in SS water tank. Now what?

Not sure if this has been said yet but DO NOT DRAIN THE TANK UNTIL THE DIESEL IS REMOVED! It will be much easier to clean if you can suck the diesel off the top. I agree that the tanks can get back to completely safe standards. You should change the fill hose as well. That won't get clean...

1986 Kia Sheng 43' Sundeck Trawler

My experience with our Kha Shing from 84 is that they are well made boats with high grade materials and hardware. For PNW it would be a boat I would value. It isn't an ocean blue water type boat maybe but excellent for inside passages etc. We really loved the 'galley down' till we got an up...

    Trim piece turned nightmare

OMG! This thread has the more advice that I would call 'wrong' than ANYTHING I have seen on TF! Trim is 'trim' and it often is only esthetic. But that trim might be protecting places where water could get into the boat - meaning into the 'walls' - where it will cause rot and major failure of...

New member - sail to power

The biggest thing I like about the trawler over our sailboat is not thinking much about the tides. There are those lever thingies on the trawler and I just push them forward until the boat is going the speed I think it should go :) Generally speaking I lean towards the idea of going for the...

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

Not the fridge exactly, just the bigger items that don't fit on most sailboats. It you cruised the tropics as much in your current boat as you did sailing wouldn't you have spent a lot more than on the cat?

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

So many variables to factor in over a long period of time. I just came from a client with a 40 year old Chris he lives on and a 40ft sailboat he uses regularly. He hasn't spent a dime on the Chris in 10 years. I don't think he has even replaced the freshwater pump on the Chris but he hauls the...
