    Manual bilge pump

Thanks to all for your comments. Both electric bilge pumps are not working. The aft pump is easily located, however I cannot locate the auto to manual switch. The fore pump is nowhere to be found....probably under the battery bank. Since theres no water off center, the manual hand pump, due...

    Manual bilge pump

Definitely Craig, and I plan on doing this. Right now we are not able to repair them. I was curious to use the manual pump for the first time to find the intake hose connected aft and starboard.

    Manual bilge pump

On my 1983 49’GB Classic there’s a manual bilge pump whose 2.5”intake hose is situated and fixed to the starboard of the engine sole. It seems to me it should be able to be moved to the center to facilitate removal of bilge water. Both fore and aft pumps became nonoperational. We’ve tried the...

Advice on cruising towrds northern Florida in Feb. 2020

My wife and I, both relatively newbies (150 hrs. on our Grand Banks 49 Classic) want to escape the cold and damp Virginia winters and spend 6-8 weeks in Florida, possibly Fernandina Beach area. We’d like anyone’s recommendations on how they would navigate the trip from Myrtle Beach down south...

    “USUAL” Broker’s commission

To Comodave and Nomad, Thanks for your input. STEM is where is at today. Right? “M” stands for “math”. So, let’s hope our future generations of boat sellers study the “m word”! Sea Fever

I’m considering selling my trawler and my broker is asking 10% commission. Is that the usual rate?

    Illuminate a lightbulb issue, please!

Thanks everyone for your input. I got up the nerve to sneK my stubby fingernails between my delicate headliner and the frame, and sure enough, there are spring clips, one on each skinny end, that snaps into place. Now my cabin is much brighter. Problem solved! Thanks! Capt.SeaFever

    Illuminate a lightbulb issue, please!

Greg, Thanks for the reply. Yes I’ve tried to move the plastic material, but the PO must have glued them in place. Ken

    Illuminate a lightbulb issue, please!

We have a 1983 Grand Banks Classic 49. The headliner throughout is in good shape. Most of my ceiling lights have one bulb that’s out, and I’d like to replace them. I’ll be darned if I can see a way to open the light fixture to replace the bulb. Here’s a photo... Any suggestions? Thanks...

South Enough to Avoid Winterizing the Boat?

We’ve got our Grand Banks at Little River and have not had to winterize. Little River, SC is just north of North Myrtle Beach.

    Bottom Maintenance

We’re in SC, immediately off the ICW. I have a diver check the bottom and zincs every year, since, at this time, we haven’t been doing cruising. If bottom painting is not an issue, why haul-out?

    Cleaning stained toilet

We keep our boat on the Little River near the SC/NC line. Here the ICW water is tea-colored due to the up stream vegetation. This water leaves a brownish stain in the bowls. Any safe way to clean these! Thanks as always! Capt. Sea Fever

    CUMMINS 555’s

An UPDATE... All of the injectors were cleaned and the injector pump rebuilt. Much water was found in the pump. I installed new glasses in my Racors. The engines are working fine. Every half hour though I have to empty approximately a cup of water from the SB Racor...not the P Racor. Since the...

    Maiden voyage

In three weeks my wife and I (newbie power sailors) will be taking out our new (to us) Grand Banks 49 Classic on our maiden voyage. She’s a 49’ trawler, draws 5’, 50w power. We plan on traveling north up the ICW to Portsmouth, Va. from mile marker 345.....near No. Myrtle Beach, SC I’m...

    CUMMINS 555’s

As a newbie this is my biggest mistake thus far.....failing to close the fuel shut off valve and being unlucky as the fuel solenoid locked in an open position. Diesel fuel flooded the entire engine causing a hydrolocked situation. tilitrider and kapnd suspected the problem as did Nizda. Nizda...

    CUMMINS 555’s

Thanks to all! Thanks to all for your comments! We have not tried to turn over this Cummins 555 by hand. My mechanic is confident that a (hopefully not many) cylinder(s) is hydrolocked by diesel. So we’re going to diagnose the problem, and I’ll keep you posted. Capt. Sea Fever

    CUMMINS 555’s

My 1983 Grand Banks Classic 49 has two Cummins 555’s, 6020 hrs. on each. Yesterday the SB engine wouldn’t start. My mechanic checked the starting battery....fine. I suspected a faulty starter, but he said it sounded like the starter was fine. The engine would not turn over. The lights in...
