With the chest freezer on and still light flickers are you sure the freezer was actually running, in other words actually cooling? Just a thought. Maybe try plugging a lamp or some thing in at the freezer outlet and see what happens?

Just an opinion! Over the years I have installed and maintained many inverters and inverter/charger. All the good names (mastervolt, magna, xantrex etc) have been very reliable, functionality may vary while some provide better means to access the information. Customer support can vary wildly...

Just a quick thought, you had mentioned that you had some old analog gauges those usually had the shunt on the + side of the battery and most digital meters require the shunt be on the - side, I have hade a couple of guages act "funny" with a positive shunt. Just a thought
