Moving to upstate NY, take the Halvorsen with me?

Welcome to upstate! You might also consider the south end of Cayuga, as its a bit closer to Ithaca. From there you can go anywhere via the canal system. Another lake is Onieda near Syracuse. There is a lot of great boating in NY and the canal is great way to explore.

    question about zinc selection

I agree with every suggestion in this thread but will chime in my 2 cents worth. Volumes have been written on this subject, unfortunately no easy answers as every situation is different. Water temp, current, salinity, boats construction, marina wiring issues, other boats wiring issues, your...

    Flickering lights when fridge runs?

With the chest freezer on and still light flickers are you sure the freezer was actually running, in other words actually cooling? Just a thought. Maybe try plugging a lamp or some thing in at the freezer outlet and see what happens?

    Flickering lights when fridge runs?

While the lights are flickering try adding an additional load to the inverter. Some manufactures have a standby mode and while enabled will look for a load then actually provide power. The light might be below the amp setting and not enough for the inverter to sense, sounds strange but believe...

    Xantrex out...Victron in

Just an opinion! Over the years I have installed and maintained many inverters and inverter/charger. All the good names (mastervolt, magna, xantrex etc) have been very reliable, functionality may vary while some provide better means to access the information. Customer support can vary wildly...

    Do shunts go bad?

Just a quick thought, you had mentioned that you had some old analog gauges those usually had the shunt on the + side of the battery and most digital meters require the shunt be on the - side, I have hade a couple of guages act "funny" with a positive shunt. Just a thought

    Solar panel

Being a marine electrician my self, I have to strongly agree with C electric, gkesden and djmarchand. And at the risk of being blunt as well, the time frame and lack of understanding your best bet is to get an experienced electrician to perform an good load analysis, and electrical audit on your...

    Exhaust Hose Repair

Marine Tech here, if I did that there would be no question whatsoever!! Replace the hose, yes expensive but.... I would never expect any customer of mine having a "repaired" hose due to my error (yes we all make mistakes). Shop should step up and everyone sleep well at night. Happy customers...

    Bilge pump questions

Well being just a "generic yard worker" I tend to agree with the fact a restricted pump will fail sooner. Not being an engineer or possessing a physics degree I dont understand some things but I know what I see. If a customer brings me or I obtain a larger pump he gets a larger hose and thru...

A lurker for years comes in from the cold

    Bilge pump questions

Just a newbies opinion, in my experience some of the rule pumps with the built in float failed due to oil in the bilge water (some of there documents even warns of this), while a bit more costly I have installed dozens of "Senior Ultra Bilge Pump Switchs" both commercial and pleasure boats...
