    Thanks everyone for all the ideas. We are packing up the boat now for the winter. We will leave it on the Rhone at L'Ardoise. More research over the winter and a Spring fix. sdowney717 suggestion is interesting but I have used jumpers to bypass all the wiring and connect the alternator directly...

It really doesn't seem to put much out and when I pull into port and switch on the shore charger the charge to the house batteries leaps up to about 23 amps...

    So thanks to av8r. The second shaft is indeed the excess fuel button which I have never used as we are cruising summers only in Europe on our Dutch steel cruiser Skookum. I sprayed it and worked it in and out a few times and presto the stop function now is back in business. Thank you Trawler...

    The motor has been flawless for the last five years and has about 2000 hours total. The injector pump has been given fresh oil every 50 hours. There is no indication of diesel in the injector oil.
