    Chain hook

I use a 1/4" dyneema soft shackle through the chain and then tie the bridle to that with bowlines. They are remarkably chafe resistant and far stronger than the chain (in this case, 5/16) and cost about $2.00 each and take ten minutes to make a new one. btw, been on the hook with this setup...

    How big of an inverter

Do not buy a much bigger inverter than you need. Their efficiency is usually highest near peak.

    Over Propping Questions

just fyi valve timing overlap doesn't have anything to do with forced induction. many normally aspirated high performance engines have loads of overlap.

WWYD? Being away from boat for a couple years

No kids (other than the 4-legged kind) and I am solo.. once again :ermm: I had not considered moving the boat closer. I may ask around about facilities and conditions. I assumed everything was frozen in winter.. It would certainly be possible to do that portion of the loop in sections...

Impeller Install Issues Cummins Diesel QSB6.7

Mine is a bear if the vanes get caught up on the water inlet "grate" on the pump body. You have to keep the leading tips of them bent inward towards shaft to pass.

WWYD? Being away from boat for a couple years

The money is good - about 5 times a year what I need for cruising all in. The thought that is sticking with me right now is I left a similarly lucrative job in 2012 to travel and work remotely, which lead to boating. This was before I even turned 40. I have never ever looked back on that...

WWYD? Being away from boat for a couple years

Interesting many of your are talking about selling the boat which is assuming I'm taking the job. The real question is giving up a few years of cruising for more money a good decision ;) I do agree re: selling how much I will use it is a key factor to consider. It would take all day to get...

WWYD? Being away from boat for a couple years

It seems silly to ask a bunch of strangers this question but I value all perspectives so here goes. I am seriously contemplating taking a job opportunity that is land locked. I'd think about it as a 3 or 4yr thing. I would then be back to live-aboard cruising after that. Maybe you all...

Single vs twin engine experience this week

+1 they are also good for local knowledge. This summer I called them to get some very specific channel advice (hell gate in georgia, maybe 20' wide channel?). Even though I had been through before trying to use charts, it was dicey and I had to get thru mid ebb this time.. Since they tow...

    Airplanes to Trawlers

Twins are not less reliable if you consider maintaining propulsion the thing you are maintaining. They are definitely more maintenance (more expensive) and less efficient (also more expensive)- all huge factors. I think you will find a lot of fans of Lehman's here, single or twin. I have...

    Airplanes to Trawlers

Losing your single engine in a boat is a Pan Pan at worst, at least to start. Losing a single engine over the rockies is a mayday.

I have stayed on AirBNB boats before. They were "non operational", basically boats turned into houses. I think it can be a good investment if you have a boat you don't plan on ever actually using.

    Insurance or not?

All insurance is an investment - it behaves like a reverse annuity with some probability of losing all your money (i.e. no claims paid) The average person would be financially better off, over long periods of time, if they could live out replacing the covered item, by simply putting their...

    Insurance or not?

Liability, yes, please. Property, if you can't afford the loss, yes. If you can, it just depends on how you value the time without it. Insurance overhead is around 45-50 cents on the dollar, a horrible investment in general, nothing you would ever put money into for your 401k, but if you...

    What size sanitation hose

I put 1.5" before I put this head in. this head has a 1" discharge. i'm not sure you could make the argument around clogging. i'd go with 1" in hindsight.

Pros and cons of single or twin engines for GB 36s?

twin owner here. next boat will be single. have run home after a minor failure too. fuel not a consideration can run 1 engine at a time and get close.. top speed, meh, thought it was important.. nice to have but not required. 2x the maintenance is a consideration that can't be ignored.
