    Marine Power 454 gas engines

Did you give consideration to making up your own hose instead? Easily done in most cases using standard copper or even plastic fittings to make the bends instead of having to spend $120 for the proper replacement

    Marine Power 454 gas engines

I have a 1990 40' Silverton aft cabin with a pair of 454s. We purchased the boat after 25 years at 4-6K in my old reliable Hunter 30 sailboat. Yes--- we had years of experience cruising very slowly, getting there is half the fun sometimes. So back to the 454s. Unless there is a rush or sloppy...

what size of solar power do you have on your Trawler

I have 4 Canadian 395 watt panels with a Victor 100-50 controller. My panels are wired to two parallel pairs in series which gets my solar voltage up to around 70VDC. My batterbank consists of 8 6V 115 amp golf carts wired into two banks. Each bank has a two parallel pairs in series. I can...

    Solar installation

Yeah——yeah—-7’’ or the world will go up in smoke! Not 8’’ or 10’’ or…..geez, is there even a fuse in the circuit? In past years I only met one person who insisted on 7’’ minimum and that had nothing to do with a boat. GET REAL!!!

    Solar installation

Solar panels are current limited eliminating the need over current protection. Now as to ‘’7 inches’’ from battery to an overload protection device, nonsense! ABYC would be better recommending that protection be as close as reasonably possible to batteries instead issuing ridiculous distances...

    Solar installation

Yes Dave, IMHO you are absolutely correct!!! Solar panels are current sources and have zero problems working directly into a short circuit. ABYC states somewhere a fuse should be 18 inches from the battery negative connection. I do not see the importance for not attaching a fuse to the positive...

    battery water filler

I use latex gloves and a paper/plastic cup filled with varying amounts of distilled water. Also wear glasses. I have enough trouble keeping track of my battery hydrometer without trying to locate other things needed to put water into batteries.

    Isolation Transformer Help

I had trouble identifying the transformer's terminals as related to the schematic. I do have one comment however and that is in normal wiring, the ''white wire'' it the GROUNDED CONDUCTOR and is needed to be connected. The green wire is the GROUNDING CONDUCTOR and should not have current flowing...

Hand held sewing machine for zippers/canvass

I AGREE! If the OP has enough storage space, he would be wise to check used inexpensive walking foot machines on Ebay.

    prop speed coating

I don't remember Prop Speed's cost other than when I last looked I thought it expensive at least more money than I wanted to spend on the stuff. So I sought out a different solution. My first approach was to have my props electrically copper plated. Sucked! Experiments continued and finally...

    6 x 12 zinc plate for CHB 34

You should not mix the anode metals. I suggest you consider aluminum rather than zinc. Auminum is less expensive and aluminum has about twice the electron life as that of zinc.

    Inverter tech

You mentioned that the AC outputs were already connected. If the AC's so called neutral (grounded conductor) was connected to the boat's bonding system at the time you were connecting the DC to the inverter, that would have immediately caused either a 12V circuit breaker to trip and maybe save...

    About to take the plunge...

Personally, I would avoid anything that could cause maintenance headaches and teak certainly is in the headache category. Good luck................

    Insurance 1980 Mainship 34

I shopped for insurance last year when my policy doubled in cost. The lowest price policy I could find was from Geico BUT they required a fresh survey which would have cost about $1K. In your case, you will surely have the boat surveyed prior to purchase so Geico might be worth checking.

    Weems & Plath Clock question

I don't know what our brass marine clock's name on the boat is other than Wifey spent a lot of money for it and was battery-powered. It included a chime/bell sound for whatever reason a marine clock is supposed to do. IT FAILED!!!! I was determined to get the clock functioning without spending...

    Inverter

I have posted on this topic before. If your inverter is an inexpensive device commonly sold for vehicle use you need to be very careful. if you wire the inverter's so called grounded conductor (which it is not) to your boat's grounded conductor circuit you will not be able to connect to dock...

The difficult transition from real estate to liveaboard

It is far more than ''some,'' it is many who are in a ''no income'' situation or at best a minimum income. This forces a major change in lifestyle.

    Freezer

I agree. Did a Google and found there is bunch of drawers out there, at least one for about 700. But I would go with a larger unit if space is available

    Freezer

I suggest as others have to avoid spending big bucks for refrigeration/freezers for your boat. I firmly believe that spending the big bucks for a 12V so called marine fridge/freezer is beyond my accepted limits for wasteful spending. 15 years ago I purchased an 8.3cuft Summit apartment fridge...

    Oil $$$

How can politics be avoided when it comes to discussing oil prices? Politics will certainly be affected because price impacts everybody's life.

The difficult transition from real estate to liveaboard

RIGHT ON Tiltrider!!! Houses are hard to come by. And no docking fees to contend with while living in it. But to each his own, I prefer our boat to be a summer camp on the water.

    solar or generator?

I had a similar experience from Massachusetts for my old sailboat almost 10 years after purchase. I received a notice from the State demanding proof I paid the sales tax. I called the collection office number provided on their letterhead and explained to a representative that I would happily...

    solar or generator?

Time to go to bed for rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day searching for subsidies. Damn!!! Poverty sucks.............or at least that is what friends tell me. Good night Dan!

    solar or generator?

No IRS worries here! I am trying to find a path to as many government subsidies as possible. Heck, Bernie is my friend. I DEMAND EQUAL EQUITY, to heck with that old bull poop of equal opportunity. Looking back at my younger years upsets me for having to pay out of pocket for my college...

    Negative 12V bus

I highly recommend you research using a half bridge such as a silver-silver chloride and actually MEASURE the voltages between it and EVERY bonded ground on the boat. I use a single divers plate style aluminum anode mounted onto my boat's transom. All of my exposed metals are bonded to the...
