    Looking for a boat

If interested our 2006 Mainship 35 Trawler is on the market. It’s been a great boat for us.

Which is the best dinghy ?

Portland Pudgy We love our pudgy. It’s fastened to boat via weaver davits on the the swim platform. At just over 7’ it’s out of the way of our transom door. The davits mount solidly to the dingy’s hard gunwale. Only rated for 2hp, so it’s SLOW. It tracks well when rowing due to long keel...

    Trim tabs on Trawlers

I have an '06 Mainship. They call it a trawler only because it looks like one ... and I agree its strictly marketing that stole the term and it unfortunately takes away from the heavy displacement boats that run at true hull speeds - the true trawlers. That said, I rarely travel more than about...

    Soap scum removal

I’m awaiting delivery of a replacement Thule shower sump kit (the pump had given up). As typical, the old one was pretty scummy, mostly from soap buildup. What is an environmentally friendly product I can run through my shower sump periodically to remove soap scum. Thanks in advance to...

First Big Boat, First Big Step

Sometimes don’t try ... You are doing things the right way by practicing. I attempted a maneuver about 2 months back that resulted in damage. My lesson learned is don’t even attempt if you can’t maintain control. I had only backed my MS 34 Trawler in a few times when I needed to in Venice...

    MS 34 Trawler broaching

Wasn't really looking for guidance of when to take my boat out, I was rather looking for people's suggestings for easier control if/when caught in that circumstance. I'm still waiting for the weather crystal ball I ordered, as the conditions on Tampa Bay that day were not forecast. ;-)

    MS 34 Trawler broaching

Raymarine Gyro David, thanks for the heads-up on the auto-pilot gyro; I will check it out. I hate it when my auto-pilot looses its mind. ;-)

    MS 34 Trawler broaching

I'm a year in with my new-to-me 2006 single screw MS 34T. My wife and I love the boat except for its handling in a following sea. If we have to run in anything higher then 2' seas, my auto-pilot can't handle it and its a very arduous and concentrated time at the helm keeping the boat straight...

Repower? How committed are you to life at 7 knots?

Why semi-displacement? I have a 2006 MS 34 Trawler with a single Yanmar 370. I cruise at 2000rpm which gives me ~7.6kts. I run much faster if conditions or time constraints require. If I was going to repower to get ONLY hull speed, I would want a full displacement boat. Semi-displacement...

Advice on Golf Cart Battery Brands

Trojans I replaced 2 8Ds with 6 Trojans on my Mainship 34. Love em. I’d buy no other.

    Kohler Genset issue ...

I have a new to me boat that just got salt water sprayed in the engine compartment due to a hose clamp breaking. Since fixing that issue I've discovered my Kohler 8Kw genset is not producing power. It starts fine, but no AC is being delivered. The genset is contained within a soundbox, so I...

    Bad day ...

Between the smell and the alarm was no more than 2 seconds. Instantly reacted at that point. I would have also reacted to the smell, but it would have taken by brain another second to process :-(

    Bad day ...

Upon returning home last weekend after a night anchoring out, I pushed our boat to semi-plane to blow out the turbo/exhaust system as I usually do as I normally run slow while underway at around 1400rpm. While running for about a minute at just over 3000rpm (we have a Mainship 34 Trawler with...

    Key West Crossing

We are booked for 5 nights so we won’t have the luxury of holding out for the perfect weather window. That said I’m not setting out if conditions are miserable. I’ve experienced the boat in 4+ following seas and it’s no fun; the boat is much worse than I expected in that situation.

    Key West Crossing

We have a new to us Mainship Trawler 34. We are planning a crossing from Marco Island to Key West for New Years (December). We are interested in any advice members may have traveling this open route in a small semi-displacement Trawler. Any input is welcome; weather, preparation, what to...

    Mainship 34T rudder and auto-pilot

After lots of searching, I just purchased a "new to me" 2006 Mainship trawler. I took delivery of the boat on Florida's East coast and last week ran her for 6 days through the Keys and up to her home slip here near St Petersburg on the West coast. For the most part the trip went well except...

    34T flybridge stair removal

Has anyone out there ever had reason to remove the upper stair molding (not the lower opening portion) going up to the flybridge on a 34T? The reason I ask is that the boat I'm closing on has non-OEM screws in the stair case molding and there are a multitude of spider cracks in the corners of...

    Bent Rudder

I will have the ruder inspected carefully prior to purchase. Thanks everyone for your observations and input. I will tread carefully on this one.

At this time, there are no 34Ts out there that fit my criteria, two of which is price and inside steering. Most of the 34Ts disappeard off the market in the past 6 months.

    Mainship 34T Stanchion backing plates

Thanks everyone. Once I have the boat here (I'll be running it down from Maryland to Florida in early June), I will post all the work I do as I progress through all the deficiencies. I'll be able to figure out pretty quick whether there is an embedded backing plate. Based on the fact that the...

    Mainship 34T Stanchion backing plates

Hopefully tapping embedded plates is all I'll need to do, along with as mentioned, re-sealing. Thanks!

I've included the surveyor's pic of the rudder shaft, showing spider cracks and bolts that appear to have leaked in the past - they did not leak in the sea trial.

    Bent Rudder

Thanks everyone. Given the two (accepted) price reductions the seller has already granted on the boat sale, he isn't willing to go any lower. Due to these issues, the offer is now at the point where I could put about $15K-$20K into repairs and still not be paying more than market for the boat...

    Bent Rudder

The prop and shaft appear to be ok. Based on the bend, my guess would be the boat lightly "bumped" something going backwards and the rudder was the only casualty. I'm just guessing, because I don't have access to the previous owners.

    Bent Rudder

Does it need to be done though, if not appearing to interfere with steering?
