    Tonga eruption....

Just read it was heard in Wellington NZ, 1300 miles distant. Here's kind of a neat overlay placed at Mt St Helens, I can only assume they got the scale correct. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FJIVEZCVIAQriCx?format=png&name=small

    Tonga eruption....

Apparently it was the Hunga Tonga volcano. The sonic boom was heard up to 470 miles away. That's going to be a mess....

    Tonga eruption....

Any one catch this one yet? Wow!! It's got to be probably 150 miles in the initial blast wave. Prayers for anyone in the vicinity.

More recommendations please (Seapiper, Beneteau, Great Habour etc

You might take a glance here - https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s9/2018-great-harbour-tt35-trailerable-trawler-%24315-000-a-57639.html A well sorted boat with what I would guess are great owners!

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

Reminds me of a saying I've heard repeated about the "Great Loop"; "go small and go now!" Congrats on making your way west, best wishes on putting together your program!

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

Sorry, posted this in the other thread. Perhaps they could be merged? Anyway, Ill toss it in here as well. lhttps://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s9/cream-puff-restored-25-skipjack-cruiser-sequim-wa-58648.html

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

Here's one in Squim from the classifieds that is relatively low cost, local, looks Bristol, and would be practically the least loss of anything so far. Maybe give it some thought? https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s9/cream-puff-restored-25-skipjack-cruiser-sequim-wa-58648.html PS How's the...

    Was this explosion necessary?

This certainly seems to be a troll thread from the start. While I'm not up to speed on the Thresher incident, I'm curious how one might operate a submarine at depth without a full crew. Any ideas? PS: Tech in 1963 is much different then today...

    Interesting boats

Well, the bright side is that it is in the PNW where craftsmen who do such maintenance can be readily engaged. Not sure about the wood to aluminum interface, might be genius, might not. As others have said, if the hull is in good shape, the mechanical elements sound, and you absolutely love...

    Designing & Building Hammerhead

I thought there are some additional pilotage rules at or above 20m as well. Dashew addressed with the first of the FPB's if I recall correctly. Seem to think his answer was a "detachable" stern extension that technically kept it under the 20m limit by formal measurement rules. Perhaps...

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

Here's another PNW boat with a long history and loyal following. http://bartenderboats.com/ Designed for the Colombia River bar, they too are safe, swift, comfortable, and reasonable to purchase with good resale. There is at least one done in aluminum designed for longer passages. I'll...

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

I'm sorry, "kin" refers to several variations of the C-Dory that exist today, not children. Though, I've found my children to be the brightest light in my life. In my experience, limited as though it may be, this is not a great time to be trying to "time" the real estate market. Hunker down...

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

I'm quite sure C-Dorys and their kin have done the inside passage. Fuel planning would of course be important. Anyway, sounds like wonderful "first world" decisions to be had. :thumb:

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

If I may speak frankly, you seem to have several ideas that are not necessarily supporting. Getting an apartment and spending 300K on a small tug seems to to me to be a wholly different plan then spending 500K on real estate and a bigger boat. I'll propose in terms of "dipping a toe in the...

Internet onboard world wide is here!

https://findstarlink.com/ With the recent launches and the latency getting them positioned correctly, I'd think "is here getting activated" would be correct. If I recall, I read today that the FCC is being petitioned to slow Starlink down so competitors can try to catch up. At 100 a month and...

Advice please. Connecticut to Lake Michigan

I can't be of any help with routing nor stops but I will suggest taking a good look at steering systems, especially if hydraulic, pumps, hoses, connections, etc. As well as generators, alternators and batteries, power production, regulation and distribution. Lastly, heads and water...

    Forward Slope Pilot House Windows

I think you're right on all points. Glare during the day, reflections at night, less solar gain and likely improved water-tightness. What's not to like? If I understand the opposition to them they look less "sleek" possibly important at speeds much higher than the average trawler will ever...

From Liveaboard Motor Sailor To PNW Trawler

I personally, would be quite interested to see the results of your calculations. Not that it's anything I'll be planning in the future, rather idle curiosity. I'm enjoying hearing the thought process and considerations of a move of this magnitude.
