    Anchoring Question

By the way, Marin is correct in that the bow configuration is a major factor in how snubbers work on various boats. I tried numerous double snubber configurations on the Krogen and could never find a solution until we went to a single. I did forget to say that our bad experience did involve...

    Anchoring Question

Don't think I mentioned a bow eye, just the loop of chaining hanging down from the bow pulpit to the chain snubber. That said I have seen numerous boats with a bow eye. On some I noticed that they had a loop of line that ran from cleats on either side of the bow pulpit. To deploy the chain...

    Anchoring Question

I've mentioned this before, but it won't hurt to repeat our experience with either a double or single snubber. We have used a double on a KK42 that has a tendency to swing more than other trawlers. With the anchor chain hanging down in a loop between the bow and the chain hook when the boat...

    Krogen 42 History

Just to clear up a few facts. There were 207 KK42s built. The last was "Daisy" built in 1998 and just recently sold by the original owner. Our boat "Aventura" hull number 204 was also built in 1998 and at that time we thought it was going to be the last or next to last build. The molds were...

    nick jackson davit

You could easily modify the sheave - just punch out the bearing and inset a bronze bushing slightly longer than the width of the sheave. Alternatively, add a couple of spacers, one on each side of the sheave bearing, of slightly smaller diameter of course. First boat from the PNW was one of...

    nick jackson davit

Our Nick Jackson davit worked flawlessly for the 15 years we had our Krogen 42. I did experience some sticking of the shieve wheel at the end of the boom. If I remember correctly Nick reminded me that I was not to tighten the through bolt too much as it would compress the side plates and...

Do you stern tie singlehanded? I've got some questions for you...

Desolation Sound area if busy will almost invariably require a stern tie. You have gotten good advice about using a floating line. Another convince is to have the stern line on a reel (ex garden hose reels work great), makes paying out and retrieving easy. Winds normally will be light and it...

    Hi Amp Alternators

My 2 cents. In 1998 I installed an Ample Power 180 amp alternator, regulator and EmonII. Set it up to output 170 amps at cruising rpm which it has done faithfully for 15 years. It replaced the original John Deere alternator, added six golf cart batteries and never looked back. Now the boat...

    I am a real newbie to trawlers, always been a sailor.now a CAMANO 31

Welcome! We too are new Camano 31 owners out here in the PNW. Our move was to downsize and we're learning all over again that we can't take all the stuff we had on the previous boat, oh joy! You might want to Google "East Coast Camano Owners" and "PNW Camano Owners", both have forums that are...

    Rudder Design

My guess was about 35 degrees. There was a big improvement in slow speed maneuvers and I did not detect any reduction in cruise speed performance although I do think there was an improvement in autopilot tracking performance. Don't know many boats with 90 degree rudder swing - must be an...

    Rudder Design

The prop was 28 by 19 3/4, the WL was 39' 11", Dspl was about 41000 w/ fuel and water. Suggest you visit any commercial yard that works on purse seiners or draggers, should find lots of rudders w/ wedges and flow plates. Tom

    Rudder Design

Much of what Geer proposes in his articles is doable however similar results can be achieved with the typical plate rudders if you add flow directing plates and wedges to the trailing edge of the rudder. It's a very common modification on many of the commercial fishing boats in the Pacific...

    Power Pulse 12 Volt Desulfator

I used one pulse unit for each bank of six golf carts. Do they work? Got 8 years out of my first set of batteries, current set has 7+ years and still going strong also got 11+ years out of a group 31 generator start battery (Interstate). Changed from an AC powered pulse device to one that...

    Danger -- do not operate

Besides the bight issue, I would suggest that Perla take a turn around the cleat just aft of her left boat shoe. Trying to hold anything with the displacement of your Coot by hand is an invitation to rope burns. Also it's really amazing how easy it is to hold a load with just a half turn...

LOA including swim step to anchor?

Give me a call (3607521741). We're in Bellingham also and just went through the same exercise for our 36 foot slip. For trawler style vessels you could look at the Nordic Tug 32 or the Camano 31. We chose a Camano but then there are only two of us and our really long trip summers are of the...

    Anacortes fly in

An Alternative Trawler Fest is OK but you might have more looking opportunities at the Seattle Boast Show in January. Cheap flights to SEA, take Skytrain to downtown, pick one of 100's hotels, walk to show, ride free shuttle to the "In the Water Show", spend hours walking the venues. In a...

    Marinized John Deere/Cat Diesels

Since 1998 at least. Our Krogen came with a 6068D in 1998. Has been flawless for the 4400+ hours we have cruised. Our NL generator (5kw) has been more of a problem. So I'm not so sure that NL does a better job of marinization.

    Sig Marine Diesel Heater Issue

We had more problems trying to start w/ alcohol than w/ diesel. Took Dickenson's advice which was to put enough diesel in the base to see a puddle, add tissue paper wick, light and wait until fuel vaporizes, takes several minutes. Seems to work well. We have no fan assist but do have a...

How far have you been in your Coastal Cruiser?

In 14 years we've been to SE Alaska four times and around Vancouver Island once. As far North as Skagway, AK and as far South as Olympia, WA. It's very doable for a cruising couple. We generally plan short day cruises to allow time to fish, crab and prawn. No fixed schedule and we enjoy the...

    Coastal Explorer charts?

Keith; We use CE with NOAA raster and vector charts, Canadian Hydrographic raster charts and Chartworld Canadian vector charts. Love the free NOAA upgrades although upgrading all 350+ raster charts does take time, best to have a high speed connection. CE now has C-Map charts available which...

Well, it's not real fancy or glossy but it is bullet proof. Beaches of oyster shells, sharp rocks, etc. are not a problem. Hauls a ton, is too heavy, won't go fast (>25), doesn't leak air and we love it. Great interior space for multiple crab & prawn traps, downriggers and usual stuff.

    Raw water impeller "end plug"?

Just wanted to throw in a good word for Globe impellers. We put 2012 hours and 7 years on the last one and when I pulled it yesterday it looked as good as new except for discoloration from the water around here. All vanes were intact and there were no worn spots on the ridges at the end of...
