    Wooden name plates

That's nice, but the rules for marking a documented recreational vessel do not require the name and hailing port to be on the transom. Richard

    Espresso Machines

I have a Pasquini Livia 90 and a Rancilio Rocky grinder. I also roast my own coffee on the boat with a Behmor 1600+. Fresh is good! No problems with the grinder or espresso machine on the inverter. I haven't roasted while on the inverter though. Not yet! Richard

KK 54 If so good, why so few?

According to Wikipedia the 10% luxury tax that included boats over $100,000 was signed into law in November 1991. Richard

    alameda fire

I know the owners of the neighboring sailboat that was also damaged as a result of the fire. It's a scary thing for sure. Richard

    posting pictures without info!!!

Me neither. And I saw some of my photos there so I can explain why they have no description. In my case I uploaded them so I could include them in a post. I didn't know they were also shown in a gallery. There was no reason for me to add the description since it was all in the post. Richard

    Marine Specific versus Regular Appliances

When I upgrade my galley I am planning to replace my three burner Force 10 with a consumer 24" four burner range and convection oven. I'm interested to see if anyone thinks this is a bad idea. The washer/dryer that I have in my boat looks to be an original apartment model from 1988 and is still...

    Anyone use a Smartplug?

I agree. I have been checking the temperature on it regularly under load. So far so good. I do think that it could have been water ingress. We had a lot of rain last winter and I don't think it sealed very well. I will watch it very closely.

    Anyone use a Smartplug?

Well, I have replaced it with a Smart Plug so I'm hoping it will be just fine. We will see.

    Anyone use a Smartplug?

I agree with your recommendation to check and clean contacts. I would also suggest that the Smart Plug is much better weather sealed than the Marinco and so there is much less corrosion to contend with. Also, during the winter I will frequently run the boat somewhere close to the 50A capacity...

    Anyone use a Smartplug?

I installed a 250V/50A SP receptacle and plug after this happened to my Marinco last spring.

    Efficient no wash hull shapes

I understand the the Prismatic Coefficient of a hull design gives a good indicator how much water will be displaced as it moves at certain speeds. The lower the number the "finer" the entry of the boat and hence less wake. That's how I read it. My Krogen 54 has a PC of 0.6 and at a couple of...

    I was boarded today

I have never been boarded in 20 years of boating. And I do get out regularly. I guess I'm lucky. In general I think it's important to appear cooperative from the start in encounters with LE. If you get off on the wrong foot it may not go well. If I were boarded and had concerns about it, I...

    I was boarded today

I'm not sure if you had time to read all 4 parts. In part 4 there is acknowledgement of the commandant's rule to not search private spaces. Richard m/v Stillwater

    I was boarded today

This 4-part article makes a very interesting read. It provides the history behind the USCG powers as well as a discussion of the 4th amendment and legal challenges. I highly recommend it: https://www.sailfeed.com/2012/10/coast-guard-boardings-and-your-fourth-amendment-rights-part-1/ Richard...

KK 54 If so good, why so few?

That's the story I heard! Who knows if it's true?
  19. Britannia

KK 54 If so good, why so few?

The story I heard was that the mold broke when unmolding hull number 8. At that point the market had changed and the luxury tax had been introduced. Krogen decided not to make a new mold. However, I can't find any documentary proof of this, so perhaps I was spun a yarn. Making 8 boats from...

    Calculating fuel needed

A day tank with a sight glass is a very accurate way to measure fuel consumption and confirm the readings from your fuel flow meter. Richard

    Calculating fuel needed

From what I've seen on ocean crossing, skippers tend to carry extra fuel in bladders, monitor their burn rate and reduce speed if necessary to keep within the planned burn rate. That would be my approach if I do this one day. Richard m/v Stillwater

    Bought a Kadey Krogen 54

Congratulations on your purchase! That's my KK54 in the video - she's hull #5, built in 1988. I've not been active on this forum for quite a while so I'm just catching up now. I'm happy to join the small group of KK54 owners and share notes. Richard m/v Stillwater

    The perils of Stabilizers

Late to the show here. Very sad to see. Very sad indeed. My 1988 Krogen 54 has a cored hull (Airtex - PVC) and Wesmar fin stabilizers. From the soundings I took on the hull at haulout it sounds very much like the area around the installation is solid cored. I don't have records when the...
