High RPM, Light Duty Diesel Engines

Siesta has a Cummins 6BT 115Hp naturally aspirated engine with around 4000 hours on it. I run it at 1800 rpm to get around 8 knots average (depending on the tide). Any rpm higher is just a waste of fuel for very little gain in speed (the relationship between rpm and speed is definitely not...

    Temp Monitoring Project

I have been away from the forum for a while but can say that you are definitely not crazy! I am also working on a similar monitoring system for Siesta, but I have not finished the prototype yet. For me I am planning to use a GSM/GPRS card for remote access. Apart from that the hardware is the...

    DIY engine monitoring system

p.s. I should add that I have a SignalK iKommunicate (from Digital Yacht) device coming in April/May this year. I was planning that anything I develop would use SignalK to communicate with various devices on board. -Mike

    DIY engine monitoring system

Very interesting thread. I started working on something similar with Arduino about a year ago, but have presently got my attention focused on building a home automation system for our new home that we are building this year. I am then planning to get back to my boat monitoring project, so...

    Binocular Recomendations

I have the Steiner 7x50 navigator and they are extremely good, particularly in lower light situations. The compass is also very good, but I have not really had to use this feature. That said, it is very good to have should the electronics on my boat fail.

CAV Injector pump solenoid wire connections

Further to my message above, I have now ascertained that it is nothing to do with the loose black wire. I managed to find a wiring diagram specific to my boat/engine and is says to leave this wire loose on netgative grounded engine installations, which mine is. So it looks like it is hour...

CAV Injector pump solenoid wire connections

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. My engine is circa 1993, I don't have the exact details here but will be up at the boat again next weekend. Regarding the wires, there are four that leave the loom by the pump. 2 wires go to the oil pressure sensor and the purple wire to the pump solenoid. The...

CAV Injector pump solenoid wire connections

Hi Guys, I have also posted this on Boat Diesel, but maybe someone here has had a similar experience or knows the answer. Anyway here goes.... I recently had to get the CAV injector pump and injectors reconditioned on my Cummins 6B engine, due to a fuel/water issue. Coincidently, the hour...

Troubleshooting Sitex MDA 1 Metadata Class B AIS transceiver...

Do you know if there is a marine traffic receiver nearby? Where I boat there not many people using AIS yet, so I relied on that for confirmation following my installation. That said I had to be out on open water to get in to their coverage area, as our marina is not covered.

Troubleshooting Sitex MDA 1 Metadata Class B AIS transceiver...

Have you loaded your MMSI number, as my understanding (based on the Vesper unit that I have) is that it will not transmit until it has that info loaded.

    What's your cruising speed.

7 - 8 knots depending on tide at 1800rpm, sometimes we get 9 knots when going with the tide and 6 knots when going against it. Single cummins 6B 115hp
