    best trawler engine

[QUOTE= Every engine manufacturer makes some less than reliable efforts one time or another. Among them, Cat 3116, Yanmar 6LP (a Toyota block), Detroit 8.2, and so on. Then there are the best ones: Lehman 2715, Yanmar 4lh, Perkins 4-236, Deere 4045, and so on. And Aluminun problems, well...

    The single engine thing

If weather allows you can tow/push with the tender to nearest anchorage assuming the tender is equipped with sufficient power. I have a 10 foot AB Rib with a 20hp Suzuki four stroke and it has no problem pushing my 24,000 lb boat at 4 to 5 knots in flat water. The ability to push the big boat...

    Diesel engine rust

Mark is correct in that it could certainly be something more serious. I generally hope for the best and expect the worst when it comes to the boat. I always take a look at the easy stuff first and move on from there. The exhaust will be easy to rule out. Do both engines exhibit the same symptoms?

    Diesel engine rust

I suspect it is likely the exhaust system and not the engine itself. My engine has less than 400 hrs and I see rust coloured water for the first few seconds after start up. The discoloured water is coming from salt water sitting in a low lying 90 degree steel elbow in the exhaust line. I...

    1983 Bestway Labelle

Boat looks to be ok based on the pictures (pics are pretty much meaningless). I had a Volvo MD30A in my boat and these engines would be of approximately the same vintage. If you ever need parts for these motors you are going to be in trouble. The parts will either not be available or cost a...

Strange noise from back end of boat

Sometimes the anti siphon loop in my cooling system makes a high pitched whistle that is audible depending on rpm. I find noises are often something rattling loose on the boat at certain rpm such as a tool in my toolbox etc. I would tie up the boat and run it under load at the dock until I had...

Advice Needed on Deliver Capt Issue

Life is too short. If you proceed with the litigation you are likely to accomplish little at the end of the day. The older I get the more I find myself avoiding situations such as these that breed negativity there seems to be enough of it in the world without a contribution from me. I say...

    Duck substitute?

I have seen a few of these in person and think they look great. The windows and pilothouse doors would be a weak point, but certainly no worse than your average coastal trawler. It would roll a fair amount without any sail when taking seas on the beam as does my boat, but with some sail up it...

    Volvo tmd31a

I had one in my boat and eventually it was finished around 4,000 hrs. We had water in the oil and were not sure of the cause. It was a great engine while it ran, but after considering the difficulty finding parts and the obscene prices Volvo charged if they were available we decided to replace...

    Winter Project Replace entire caprail

Looks like everything is going according to plan. Too bad you are having some difficulty with that one section, but I am of the opinion if it is coming off easy then it really does need to be redone. I pity the poor future owner who may have to try and remove the cap rail off my boat.... dad...

Looked at a boat and have questions

Per your earlier post....just remember to keep in mind that it is indeed a buyers market right now and there are plenty of boats out there. I think looking is half the fun and in past when I have completed a boat purchase it is always with some sadness that the search is over. It sounds like...

Looked at a boat and have questions

I don't know much about Carvers, but I do know that neglect and repo's go hand in hand. This is a big boat with many systems that have likely all been neglected for years. I would move on to the next one. I would also like to second the 4788 if this is the type of boat you are looking at...

    Winter Project Replace entire caprail

I agree you should through bolt if possible. If your cleats sit a top the cap through bolting them will be crucial.

    Winter Project Replace entire caprail

I considered a drip groove on the undersurface of the cap as well and i think it is a good idea; however, i could not think of a way to do it accurately and decided if i needed to I could add something down the line such as an L shaped profile in aluminum or similar that could be secured to the...
