Caterpillar D343 - Economy and Specs?

What HP rating do your engines have? D343 being a Pre-Combustion engine don’t like being run slow. Trying to run them slow to conserve fuel will only oil them up. Here are the fuel curves.

Why is the crew outside ?

I have an RNLI Arun Class boat. Older technology but similar. Vision from inside isn't good. It's easier to operate from up top. The capsize units are mounted down near the bottom of the bilge. If the boat rolls over the engines shut down and radar stops rotating. As soon as it is upright there...

    Interesting boats

Twins to single are easy to work on and you can do maintenance on either engine while still running on one. Pretty common around Asia but usually in boats over a 100'. A few photos of a boat I used to work on.

    cat D343 twindisc oil?

I have D343's 460Hp with Twin Disc MG514 transmissions which were the CAT standard transmission for this engine. I use Castrol TFC 430 Transmission Fluid but any single weight 30 engine oil is fine. That is what you should be running in the engine also. They don't like multi-grades.

    Show us your helm

A bit dated and industrial but reliable. Not much fun to try and single hand though, designed for a crew of 5.

    Do I need a Shipwright?

Sue, I think what you are referring to as Graphite is in fact Ilmenite. Very heavy black sand, often used as counterweight in cranes etc. Rot Twitchin, rod@rtmarine.com.au is a surveyor on the Gold Coast and quite good to deal with. He also does project work. There are many shipwrights just up...

Newbie looking for a long range dive boat

Or how about this? You can have your own dive charter business already in the Philippines. https://www.pgyc.org/classified/tourdiveboat.pdf You want to seriously rethink single handing any boat in PNG or the Southern Philippines. I work here in PNG and have a house in Mindanao Philippines. It's...

    Almost downunder... nearby storage?

I have lived in the Philippines for more then 20 years and have been working in PNG for the last 7. Been to many islands and rivers, usually on LCT's. The Royal Port Moresby Yacht Club is the only safe place to leave a boat but it is very difficult to get a long term berth there even as a...

    Steel boat vs fiberglass

It depends what material you are used to working with. Do you really know what is going on internally on a plastic boat? Tapping and measuring moisture content on a GRP hull does not always give a true indication of serious issues that may be hidden. The RNLI has spent many years testing their...

    Steel boat vs fiberglass

The construction of the Arun Class boats like mine is unusual in that they built the same hulls out of 3 different materials. The first 3 prototype boats were built out of laminated wood, 3 layers of Agba over laminated frames. Another 42 boats were built out of different GRP resins as the...

    Engine loading

I have worked on engines from many different manufacturers in all types of machines and generators. Lots will slobber when insufficiently loaded. On generators load banks are often installed to make them work hard enough. I had a new crane engine recently that was particularly bad and this was...

    Hydraulic steering

If it is a Hynautic system the purging instructions should be on the reservoir. Turning the auto pilot on can also help in bleeding. Any good 15W hydraulic oil will do the job and is much cheaper than what is sold through marine outlets.

    What's your cruising speed.

33,000Kg boat cruising at 16.5kn I'm using 160L per hour. At 11kn burning 73L per hour but the engine don't like being run so slow. 2 x Cat D343 460Hp I find some of the figures on here unbelievable also.

    Air Leak from Fuel Tank?

Many boats in commercial survey require shut off valves in both lines for fire safety. They have a connector rod between both valves though so that one cannot be opened or closed without the other so that no one can screw up.
