Interesting boats

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Yeah, it doesn't look much worse than many other boats out there. When I see pix like that glass-looking sculpture perched on a granite table... I get the impression that was more dock queen than ocean-going.
I forget the full story on Poseiden but she was not originally a marina queen. She was commissioned by a local business person and later owned by a corporation who used her for entertaining. She obviously had the misfortune of being remodeled in the 1980s. For the times and for the area, she was sort of a mega-yacht, last of the bygone Era when the rich and famous would take their yachts to Catalina for the weekend thus large anchors were not really needed. Recall, the yacht Natalie Wood died on at Catalina was actually a bit smaller than this Poseiden (with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken - three of the hottest stars I Hollywood at the time).

Golden age of SoCal yachting.

I found this interesting (Flo-Mo also has designs for kayaks, rowing shells, and wherry's)
Given the skyrocketing price of plywood these days that might be a spendy project.

Those boats cost around $700 to $800 using MAS epoxies and Okume marine ply, the cheapest current marine ply I can find in the sizes required. The cost of regular construction lumber has put many projects on hold for me this year. I miss those days of $1.98 8ft. studs. :surrender:

Greetings,
Mr. A. That looks to me to be a sheltered water boat. Bays and coves. I don't know if I'd want to "expedition" in any blue water with that one. Something just doesn't look right, to my eye.

Supposedly the hull started life making drilling mud deliveries to platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, I'm guessing the house was built much later by the current owner. Very beamy, so perhaps it's decently stable (???) Who knows. Maybe the owner conducted stability tests :socool:

Feeling nostalgic looking at the accompanying workboat, operated many similar ones over the years.

Read through and glanced every [of the very many] photos. I believe the original gestation of her design was likely extremely sea worthy.

Although her current layout as a "house boat" looks quite spacious and comfortable [too many strictly white walls - lol]... I feel she's seen her better days for deep sea travel. I'd not like to be aboard in heavy seas as waves crushed against the "house" flat wall areas. Doubt those flat walls were built to withstand huge crashing waves.

That said - with only 4'6" draft - she'd probably make a roomy, fun live aboard boat for enjoying inside passageways!

Keep in mind, when this boat was made (1980)... Mud boat and drill rigs were a lot closer to the shore. 4'6 draft is not a real mud boat for modern times...And she has been "remuddled" several times over the years. Inshore/ICW cruiser at best. Certainly a cool boat for service within her design limits...

I think Swampu's project is way more viable and realistic.

Because who wouldn't want a vessel with an operating engine order telegraph?

Apparently Lister Blackstone engines are at least partially supported by the successor, MAN Diesel.

Of course...if I could, I would just buy MV Fintry instead, which still also has the telegraph mounted at the helm (if not as prominently), and is powered by Caterpillar.

Video of two of their sisters, in the Manchester Ship Canal.

An innovative solution to those persistent British engine oil leaks I suppose. I wonder if they have deck fills?

This boat is available for free and has a great name! How can you ever go wrong with that winning combination???IMG_0237.jpg

This was posted to a Fujifilm camera forum and they are wondering what the story/history is here? I have no idea. Think it was taken in England.

Quite sure she’s a motor sailer.
Nice hull. No fwd visibility.
CQR anchor usually indicates a sailboat owner.
