First boat, first voyage

So the picture doesn't do it justice, it's actually a picture of Mahalo from Pineapple Girl's husband Matt who was in Monterey sailing, but directly behind Mahalo is a MAGNIFICENT 65+- Hatteras, Gratitude, going from San Diego to San Francisco or Seattle.

All this is second hand but the gossip is that the owner got it to the fuel dock in Monterey and needed to bring it into the municipal marina and couldn't do it. It is a blood pressure raising voyage of 1/4 of mile through boats and "Jaws", the opening in the sea wall. He asked one of marina workers to bring her over.

It turns out that it is the owners first voyage on a new boat....which is his FIRST boat. No starting out with a Bayliner open bow, no aluminum fishing boat, no sailing El Toros in grade school, a full fledged mega yacht for his first boat.

And the weather from PT Conception to Big Sur has been awful, I've been watching hoping to go south. Even being nearly twice the size of Mahalo, it could not have been fun for he and his wife coming north. The boat is going to be in Monterey for a few weeks while the owner recovers....

I'm willing to bet a delivery captain will finish this voyage off.

That was a big bite. The new owner will have to do a lot of "chewing" before swallowing.

Apparently there is a story, that we might hear someday, but this guy made it a few 100 miles in the ocean

The owner (a seasoned boater without a lot of off shore experience) started with a friend (91 yo) of the broker who had made the trip countless times before. They started the trip with an out of date small scale chart and a 30 yo copy of "Charlies Charts."

The "friend" really didn't have the capacity or temperament to make the trip.

I actually have a 2002 34' Seahorse "John Henry" model here in the NW.

"Courageous", and "Character Forming" are expressions coming to mind. You have to hand it to the owner,he must have coped ok up to getting on the fuel dock, and had the good sense to get help when he really needed it.
Hope he joins the Forum, he`ll have some "white knuckle" stories to tell. Someone local should send him an invite. BruceK
