Which pump, coolant or raw water pump?
Coolant, and I don't have the book yet. 300 bones on the webernets and my local place doesn't have one. I did ask them yesterday about running the rack. They will run the rack on both of them for 500 bucks. Doesn't sound to bad.

They make a special bent wrench to do that with. The wrench also is used on the fuel pump.

well i pulled it off. For the next guy I would follow these steps.
1. Take the hose clamps off of the water pump and all the bolts. Us a 1/2" wrench and you will need to bend your hand in a tight spot.
2. Take whatever is infront of the water pump off. 4 bolts hold it on and two hose clamps.
3. Pull the water pump out and take it to the dealer for a new one.
I'll put it on tomorrow and see if I have any leaks.
Alfton, I wish I had the special wrench but luck was on my side because everything came off very easy. I think I will pick up a set of ratchet wrenches to put it back on.
Type ratchet wrenches fast three times. Very hard.

Setting the rack

$500 sounds ok. If the guy is good it's about 1-2 hours but it takes a educated feel to set the clearance. It would be worth it to watch and maybe have him give you some training.

$500 is fine IF he has done it many times.

An hour ot two is impossible as the proper procedure calls for the head torque to be checked and each valve adjusted also, on a warm engine.

A really good experienced fellow will need a half day , IF the engine can easily be turned with a long bar.

Da Book sez to adjust valve on cylinder (say) 4 when cylinder 1 valve is in a certain position.

This requires great care, but the engine should sound like a sewing machine if all is done with skill.

Da Book to search for is "Students Manual Gray Marine Diesels"

first printed 1942 , I have the 3rd edition.

It is spiral bound and mine was about $75 on line, in fair condition.

Amazon shows one for $10.00

http://www.amazon.com/Students-Diesels-Standard-High-Output-Models/dp/B000ITXSDO

Best $10. you will ever spend.

Thanks Fred, I just bought it. You know the engine sounds like a sewing machine now with the valve covers off. I wander if I am over thinking these things. Should I just skip the rack? What does it sound like if you need to run the rack? Thanks

My advise is to find an experience diesel mechanic in your area as the cost of the part and the hazel is not worth the hour or two labor. Also while he is there have him look over and the check other things and make sure you are there to ask questions and learn. The bottom line reason is so you have a mechanic that knows you when you really need a mechanic. :socool: Besides there is a high chance I will incur bodily/physical damage which will about equal the labor cost and saves a trip to the emergency room. Besides I am getting to old to squeeze/contour my body into those spaces.:oldman:

When you start it up cold it should run smooth, no lopeing. Wish I could send you my guy. He was x navy and learned on the 2 strokes. He even had a 2 stroke in his 68 IH pickup back in the 70's. Could be heard coming miles away. Ideally you want one of the old guys with lots of experience.Larry

Thanks Larry, The port motor does lope when starting it up. It last for about 30 seconds and smooths out. I ran it today for the first time since I changed the water pump and thermostat change out. I ran it for about an hour before I shut it down. No leaks but the transmission won't run in foward. I'm going to start a new thread for that.

You can eyeball the rack, to see if it needs to be adjusted.

Since each injector is the injection pump, they all MUST operate together.

If you operate the linkage by hand , and all the injectors start to open at the SAME TIME , your'e home free.

IT is a very fine requirement , so look carefully , and "almost together " is no good.
