Never Again IV.... Not really, but i saw that once and loved it. Really says it all! Our boat is called STEELHEAD. It's steel, and we live on the river but return to the sea every year. Also the name of our favorite microbrew.

Delta Bay Marina, I'm not familiar with that marina. Is it on the loop? I'm actually at the Boat House in Locke across the street from Al the Wop's. Hope to meet you.

Big Tuna....named after a very interesting experience I had in Port Garibaldi Oregon when bringing my boat up coast from San Francisco to Vancouver after purchase. Long story short, had an electrical fire in the engine room in rough seas 30nm off shore at 4:30am. Fire was contained, but coast Guard escorted us into port. The mechanical shop there was called Big Tuna and the owner was a very unique individual. The whole experience created a memory for me that I would not forget and as luck would have it, there are no other Big Tuna's in Canada!

'Angelina' is named after my wife's grandmother. She was rather short and stout but like all Italian women she had an undeniable sense of style.

My previous sailboat was named "Gemma", after my wife's other grandmother.

See the pattern here?

"Morgan" She is named after our lab, who I got the day I met my wife. She died (17 years later) a few weeks before we got the boat. Our tender, which will run 20 knots, is named Go Go. Go Go is what both our boys called Morgan (the dog, not the boat) when they were babies.

Our current lab is named Water, it is going to make a funny boat name.

I HATE all joke and pun names on boats. Please, God, if you ever buy a catamaran don't name anything with the word "cat" in it or a reference to two of something.

Levada is the name of small watercourses or irrigation ditches on the spectacular island of Madeira. There is a network of hundreds of km of these small canals which bring water from the wet north side of the island to the drier, more populated south side. Great walking and hiking because there are maintenance paths beside most of the levadas. Loved spectacular Madeira and hope to return to spend more time hiking the levadas. So named the current boat (and my first sailboat) Levada -- Watercourse.

One of my favorite boat names is "Never Again II". cracks me up.

Choosing a name for a boat can be a formidable tas, in as much as there has to be some sort of relation ship to a story which is see many of you have told.
however i can tell you this " Jennifer "that :-

a persons name is"The sweetest sound in any language".

We decided to call our mainship 400 " ANDROMEDA" a name which goes way back in history, so if you would like to hear our story please point your computer in the right direction.

Melanie & I have directed our IPad your way to hear "the rest of your story" about ANDROMEDA.

"ANCORA" with the accent on the second syllable, means "again" in Italian. As this is our fourth boat, I thought it was appropriate.

Where do you locate the ships / trawlers name back; front or side ?
that is so very personal it is your boat for sure !

Personally i prefer to locate the name on both sides of the boat up high where it can be seen by the water patrol, "Men in blue".

The main reason for this is that i am not to happy when other boat people come up on my stern looking for the ships name .

While i am at it, a boat name should be easily understood be the guy who opens the bridge. Don't really want to name a boat "Get Lost "

We live on Lake Michigan and boat on the Great Lakes. I am an LA Laker's basketball fan, and my daughter's high school mascot was a Laker. When we do the Great Loop I wanted others to know where we were from. Need I say more?

Don't have much choice on a GB since the nameboards incorporate the running lights. We made our own after acquiring the boat since the original boards had been cut down so they only held the lights. We made ours longer than the stock size.

We also made new name and hailing port boards for the transom. But since our dinghy obscures the transom we had the vinyl shop make us up a name and hailing port in black in the same style letters as the boards and we put them on the bottom of the Livingston.

We don't like the look of lettering on the bow of a GB. Fortunately since our boat is documented we don't have to display the state registration numbers on our boat.

Mine is on the stern, but see advantage of having it on the sides, especially when carrying a dinghy on the stern.

Here in the States, if our boat is documented by the USCG there are fairly strict rules about how and where we place the name.

Fortunately there are options depending on the design of the boat and the USCG is NOT very picky with how we rec guys do our names...many are NOT within the regs...

Per the USCG documentation center: "The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. The vessel name of a commercial vessel must also be marked on the port and starboard bow and the vessel name and the hailing port must also be marked on the stern. All markings may be made by any means and materials that result in durable markings and must be at least four inches in height, made in clearly legible letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals. The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated." (emphasis added)

Thanks...I keep forgetting..I think they changed that awhile back to make it easier/nicer for recs...kinda like I think they are more flexible with names than they used to be because of the huge increase in documented rec boats.

HOA :Flower in Vietnamese

AND very short for spelling at VHF !
Before we had boat named " Fleur de Tendresse" or "Oaristys" and always the answer from the air was : 'please could you spell'

This is how I see my boat The "MV Carabao"

Our first boat was a 35 Ericson sail boat we named "Sausy Wench" for the wife and it fits.
The second boat was a 3218 Bayliner we named "Selkie Song" for the mythical creatures that live in the ocean as seals and then shed their skin when ashore to take on a human form.
The third boat is a 4588 Bayliner, it came with the name "Paloma" which means Dove. As this boat has turned out to be our sort of life boat from lifes trials it seem to fit.

The new-to-us '79 Cheoy Lee 46 LRC that will be our liveaboard/workaboard research vessel will be renamed "Traveler". My wife came up with the name as we will be traveling all over the Pacific NW producing our video cruising guides and other feature stories.

"Traveler" has the name of Robert E. Lee's horse.

"Traveler" is also the name of a jetliner assembly step that cannot be completed per plan and so "travels" with the airplane as it moves down the assembly line. A traveler almost always results in expensive and time-consuming rework because other components that were installed per schedule often have to be removed in order for the traveler to be installed. So at Boeing a "traveler" is a Very Bad Thing.

I think Travler is a pretty cool name.

In my younger days I was sort of a travler.

Like the song I was born a ramblin man.

Brings back fond memories of my youth.
