Gas Shocks / Struts

I use these guys. You can get them in stainless steel, in a range of lengths and with whatever pressure meets your needs. Now sure, they are in Australia. But I'm making the point that there is no need to use car/truck spec ones that don't last that long. There should be a similar supplier in the USA somewhere.

There are people in Australia who do auto exchange replacements, using rebuilt struts. So repair may be possible, as well as replacement.

Check with Napa Auto, or other auto part's stores (AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc). Gas struts are commonly used in hood and trunk lids in today's cars and SUV's. I needed to replace gas struts on an overhead hatch on my NT. Bring one down and they can match length, lift weight, and support mount. My local NAPA didn't have the length I needed in stock, but were able to order it and get it to the store next day.

Not long I needed to replace a pair of hatch struts. I found a number on the failed strut, googled it, and up came a direct replacement with the same numbers. Take a look at yours.

Amazon has them in various lengths and pound ratings, just don’t get them too powerful as they can loosen your hinges.

Thanks everyone for the advice. From what I have been able to find, the Napa / auto type are not stainless steel, and for a couple of my hatches (over fish holds, where salt water exposure is severe) stainless is a necessity.
The only markings on my existing are in Chinese, and my friend, who is a native speaker, says the translation is nothing about size or capacity or even manufacturer -- more of a safety warning.
Determining lift is going to be a little bit of a problem because all off the struts have failed to the point that there is virtually no springiness / lift remaining.

If there is a model and mfgr on them that should also give the lift rating and length.
I went through similar on my trailer a couple years ago.
You have to really look as the stamping was small and partly paint filled.

eBay or Amazon is the cheapest/fastest. They seem to last as long as originals.

I see these struts as consumable items: in most cases they will lose pressure and weaken long before they rust out. I can see springing for stainless on a fore hatch that spends most of its time open with the struts shafts exposed to salt air to prevent premature failure due to a pitted shaft damaging the seal, but only there. If the hatch is kept closed with the strut compressed, but the cheaper ones.
