During my ablutions yesterday I noticed two areas where, for some reason, I am really stingy on. On a lot of things I can be a bit wasteful money wise, but these two I never am.

Toothpaste. I squeeze every single last drop out of that tube, rolling it up as tight as I can and still trying to get that last toothbrush fill until I can't get another drop!

Deoderent stick; I know when I pick it up how light it is, then I start to see the hole where the deoderent is held by the base and know it's about to crumble - but durn it, do I keep on using it until it falls apart and hits the floor!

Don't know what it is, but I can't quit doing those two things? :)

What are you stingy on to an unreasonable degree?
 
If you take a tube of toothpaste after about 75% has been used, and drag the tube bent, over the edge of the counter from closed end to open end, it's faster and works better to move the contents forward.

What amazes me more is how somethings I don't think about paying more for and others drive me to shop price. I have no issue tipping $4 to my barber in Maryland (she is very nice and does a great job), but paying 5 cents per gallon more to fill my truck up ($1) seems a crime.

I too am stingy on toothpaste. But.... I have a boat. Makes no sense.

One "discussion" we have at home is why drive to Costco, an 82 mile round trip for us, to save $5 or $10 over local stores? Oh well, we all like the samples!
 
I'll play.

Toothpaste is one of mine, too. So is hand lotion. To the point that I will turn the old container upside down and drain it into the new container before recycling the old container.

Teak is mine. I have every last tiny cut piece, even if it’s a weird cut I can still make a bung out of it.
 
I long for the days of metallic toothpaste tubes where bottom folds would stay put between new folds as the paste is consumed.
 
Line. I will keep a piece a foot long, for that one day I need it. I have every size you can think of and in normal, and not so normal lengths. I just won’t throw even a short piece of line away if it is still good.
 
Hairspray! I’m stingy on hairspray. How about you guys? Lol!
 
Wait, you mean people just throw stuff away without using every last bit?

What's the point in that? You only have to buy more sooner and more often.

Now if you want to talk about things I waste money on, well, this is a boating forum...
 
I'll add another one. My twin razor blades. I know I should replace them more frequently but... only when I am taking off the top layer of skin! those things are darned expensive!

I think I go about two months (shaving every other day mostly). I think they recommend every week - but then they are trying to sell blades! :)
 
Oh Pshaw, you guys are a bunch of rookies when it comes to toothpaste. I love the new plastic tubes. I get every bit I can out of them, then blow in the end to inflate it a bit. Then I hold it under a dribbling faucet to put about 1/2 tsp in the tube. Shake it up real good, let it sit overnight so the water will be absorbed by the dried out paste and there's another week's worth of getting those toofers white.
 
My shave cream says “90 Day Supply” on the label. I once wrote the date I opened it on the tube. Damned if I didn’t get 93 days. Of course my face was a little raw.
 
There is a lot of marketing which encourages waste (and extra purchases)...

I just realized; this was the first year I don't remember anyone trying to tell me I should throw away all those perfectly good 9V batteries in my smoke detectors when we set the clocks back. Maybe the battery lobby has finally abandoned that stupid idea. Or maybe I just lead a sheltered life now.

Don't get me started on the phony "sell by" dates on products.

And then there's packaging. I wish the products inside were as indestructible as the packaging.

I guess I just dislike unnecessary waste at any level. That's probably why my barn is full of scrap lumber and parts "I may need someday."

Indeed. There was a packet of "200 million years old Himalayan salt" in the supermarket, marked "use by 2020".

Viagra. I cut those pills into 4 pieces. 1 for the wife, 1 for the girlfriend, 1 for the maid, and 1 just for me!

This is a funny thread.


My wife has an aversion to using the last of most any consumable; shampoo, cooking oil, cleaning spray, laundry detergent etc. but especially toothpaste. We have some sort of weird symbiotic relationship I guess. But as a result she uses part of the tube then passes it down to me. I haven't opened a new tube of toothpaste in more than 25 years.


The only problem is that I can't seem to keep up with her. I currently have three tubes in my bathroom drawer, one in my travel kit and one on the boat, all 1/3 full or less. It was worse as I just finished a tube last week, it takes me more than a month.



Anyone in the market for a tube of Colgate 1/3 full, but otherwise like new? All reasonable offers entertained.

With me, it's not stingy and I won't go to the effort some of you apparently do. However, I'm annoyed by what I consider to be such flawed designs on many products that we can't access more than 80-85% of the product. Toothpaste, shampoo, lotions such as sun lotion.

Wifey B: I sure hope you only use it professionally and not otherwise. Ewwww.....bad stuff....damage hair, breathing. Yuck yuck yuck. :mad: Now, I accept it as ok in front of the camera. :)
