Use of searchlights at night

Theoretically, in a narrow channel I'd tend to focus the spot light toward starboard, like one or two o'clock.
 
Spotlight = tool


and what happens when the tool is inferior or used incorrectly?


what happens when you really need the perfect tool for the job and you don't have it or choose to not use it (often through inexperience)?


what happens when you THINK you have great night vision and it isn't quite good enough for what you are doing?
