After nearly two years of being boatless, and three false starts we are under contract for a 48' Californian. We now have a list of survey items to address and I'm looking for reviews, good or bad, on yards in or around Anacortes. Cap Sante? Marine Service center? LaConner Maritime?
North Harbor did the haul and wash for survey and they were horrible - 2 hours late, surly, unapologetic and damned expensive. I won't return there but am interested in other's experience with any other yards.

Seabag, I've had great experiences with Cap Sante Marine. I won't go into details but suffice it to say they went above and beyond.

Another direction, but a little further, would be Port Townsend.
 
Cap Sante Marine in Anacortes. Knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, fair pricing. Had my boat splashed off a truck there, then put back on a truck two months later. Both times they did a bit of work on the boat. I was quite happy with them both times.

Seaview North in Bellingham would be my choice.
 
I'm a North Harbor customer. While not cheap I've used their mechanical services and found the quality of work to be good. The crew who hauls may not be representative. I'm not trying to make excuses but the lauch crew is often pretty harried during the busy period, they're not the people who work on the boats.

However, if you can't tolerate NHD, have you considered running over to Sidney BC? Over the past few years I've had both South Island Marine, and Vector Marine do some repairs. Last summer we had an emergency generator repair at South Island. I found the labor cost to be quite reasonable due to the exchange rates. Also Philbrooks has a good reputation, I just haven't used them myself, though my father did with good results.
 
After 2 haulouts, one for mechanical and one for cosmetic work, I would recommend North Harbor. My experience was much better than described and much better than another yard in the South Sound.

A thought or two ---

You've received some wonderful suggestions. Since you're in Friday Harbor, maybe ride your bike onto the WA ferry and go to Sidney. Check out the various mentioned yards and look at their facilities. Add to the mix Raven and Blackline at Canoe Cove. Have a work list and discuss with each the project schedule and ability to get estimates once they view vessel. Call in advance to get the name of who to talk to and their availablity once you get to each yard.
 
This thread will be very interesting to me as I am in the Anacortes area (La Conner) as well, and at some point will need someone to do professional work. I intend to do whatever I can myself at La Conner Maritime's self service yard, but will be paying close attention to what our TF alum have to say. When others are recommending yards in other ports I recognize that for a founded boat in good condition even a day's travel for a yard is extremely little cost compared to a day's labor in the yard.

If you are looking for any self service yard at all close to Anacortes, La Conner Maritime is it. My past experience with them is good, but the work I've asked them to do was relatively minor (help with pulling props, sending them out for work, putting them back on before going back in the water) while we handled bottom paint, wax, and a transducer on the transom in the yard. Working with them in that way was very smooth. I got my work done during the week after work and on the weekends, and they launched the boat one day while I was at work, and it was waiting for me at their dock when I got off work so I could take it back to the slip with the shiny new props on it. This was probably 10 years ago now, but my understanding is they are still operating in the same way.

Without having had work done by NHD, I have a similar impression of their launch crew from one 1 (ONE) time in and out of their long term storage. Without having used their shop or yard for having work done, I have heard from others good things about their mechanics in the past.

This is very interesting. A PO of my boat in the 90's or early 2000's took it up to Canada for new shafts (or was there when he needed them?) The boat ended up with metric shafts, but it would be interesting to hear how parts labor comes out in the end for US boaters who go up there for getting work done. Is Sidney cheaper than Vancouver?
 
Good feedback, thanks to everyone who responded. Right now the boat is in Anacortes and my preference would be to stay close this time around. One issue to be addressed is a stbd side overheat so I'm not inclined to go too far. I've had work done in the past at Seaview North and also at Philbrook's and was pleased with the results. I am getting estimates from Cap Sante, Marine Service center and LaConner Maritime. I'll post a summary after all are in, and let you know where I go.

I'm at Anacortes Marine Group now with a new to me Californian 42 LRC. I'm happy with the quality of the work and original estimates. Fair and reasonable. I'm here every day which I believe helps. The techs get to know me and trust me to make reasonable decisions as 'surprises' come up. They don't have to wait until I can be reached for decisions. And they let me fiddle around with little projects as long as I don't get in their way.
