    • Buyer or Seller suggests Paypal "Friends and Family" payment. Paypal is a good way to arrange payment but an invoice for goods and services should be used rather than "Friends and Family". "Friends and Family" avoids fees BUT there is no recourse if the transaction runs aground. Friends and Family is for gifts only. There is no protection for Friends and Family transactions, so never ever use it to buy something.
    • Declines to allow viewing the item before proceeding with the transaction.

Sandcasting is low tech , a local prop shop should be able to create a plug, cast it , then machine it to fit.
 
If you have a rudder they can use that to make the mold, or you can make one out of plywood. It is not expensive to have something cast.
 
I wonder if it's something that can be made on one of those slick new 3D printers.

OK. We have a machine like in our engineering dept that but it is not called that.

Very expensive compared to making one from plywood or clay.

1st make a 3d CAD drawing.

2nd find somplace that has*a machine and one large enough for the job (ours would be too small to make a rudder).

Pay for the service. (I will find out what ours costs to run someting as large as a rudder and advise.)

Thanks for your comment.* I wish we had one to use for a mold.** A boat mechanic said he could get something close, and machine it to fit, but* it would be expensive.

( or photograph and dimension one to make a plywood model?)

I have both my* Californian 34 rudders out for repair; if you need measurements, let me know.

No problem, but it will take me a few days to get to the shop in MD to access the parts. Might put your request on the Californian forum & see if anyone has a 34 on the hard & could help out faster.
 
Do you still need rudders?

I have 2 on the hard right now and can photo, measure whatever.

LOOK on the californian forum.* There was a discussion about rudders and sizes on a 34LRC.* You don't mention what model Californian you have.* In the rudder thread it was pretty obvious that some variation exists in rudders between model years and even within the same model year.* My boat is on the hard right now.* I believe by memory mine are 14" high x 10" wide.* I can check that on Wednesday when I'm working on the boat, if you like.* My rudders are somewhat rectangular, others are more rounded.* I have a picture of mine but unfortunately they are in the camera in the boat and not on my computer.* I bring it back Wednesday evening as well.*

I have had no experience yet with these people, but will have by the end of the week if they ship my cuttlass bearings and zincs I ordered this morning from them.

My rudders*are very close or identical to the spade shape model 10r20SS1.2

Others Californian ownershave what* looks like the standard* shape.

I don't know what my shaft size is but you should have the stuffing boxes to measure.

There is a lot of latitude in rudder designs that will work.*
 
Ordered some shaft collars for my ongoing rudder issues from Deep Blue Yacht supply; prompt shipment; good quality items. Will most likely order from them again
 
not rocket science...you don't have to have the exact same rudder as before.* Any rudder that has the same shaft length and diameter and approximate area will work...especially if lower than full planing speed (less than 20 knots or so).* The other consideration is if it has a lower bearing or is balanced...if not just get something close.*
