We are shopping for our retirement boat and started noticing that on some models the windows on the port and starboard side of the salon are fixed. The only ones that open are the aft and the side windows in pilot house. The boats we have seen this in are Selene's, Symbols and DeFevers. We plan to spend a lot of time in Florida after we do the loop so ventilation will be important. What is the experience of fellow trawler owners regarding good ventilation while at anchor and marina's. I find it odd that these windows don't open.

The side windows not opening may be to prevent leaks. At anchor the wind will come from the bow so the side windows not opening may not be an issue. If you get a boat that the windows do not open, the first thing I would do is fabricate some exterior covers out of Pfifertex or similar material. It will help a lot to keep interior temperature down.
