Manual fuel valve question

I hesitate to even ask because it sounds so dumb, but does this valve point to the port that’s open or closed? I have one from from my aft fuel tanks. One side is port and other is starboard and middle port heads to engine. There is some writing (on, off), (open,close)on the bulkhead below it that’s been scribbled out more than once. I know I could take it apart and find out but if it’s a simple explanation then I don’t need to.

The pointer indicates which the port you are selecting to be connected to the common port.

Ok thanks. That’s what I thought. I’ve seen the same valve called a shutoff valve and thinking it might mean that it points to off.

I have a similar looking valve that when pointed to the fuel source is closed,
no fuel to L or R port.

Very handy when changing fuel filters from a gravity fuel tank.

I have a single engine. My fuel source is left and right(aft port and starboard tanks). The center port heads to Racors .

FF, I think you may be confusing people. Most people will be using this valve to select one of two tanks to supply the engine. By selecting the output port with the pointer on the handle, all flow through the valve is shut off.

Unfortunately I think there are a few possible answers.

Looks like a Moeller fuel valve, but can't be certain. On the Moeller, the common port is on the bottom. That would make the one you show a 4-port valve, and the port on the side pointed to by the handle would be the selected port. If you can turn the handle so it points where there is no side port, then it would be off.

That said, if there is no port on the bottom, then it is probably a tank 1, tank 2, tank 1+2, off valve. Check out teh Groco FV-450-X as an example.

I think the reality is that it will be real hard to say for certain without some experimentation, or removal and inspection.

Agree...the 3 way on my assistance tow boat was NOT intuitive.

It was more a 1, 2, off motion rather than left, off, right or what one might think.
