Hey Everyone

I currently have a water heater with 1 inch heat exchanger connections to the engine. I need to replace the original water heater and the ones I've found have 1/2 inch heat exchanger connections. Is it okay to install a bronze reducer from 1 inch to half inch or will that have an adverse affect on the diesel engine?

Less flow from the engine to the heater the better for the engine, and if the water heater is 1/2 it will be happy as that is per design.

Since the connections you are talking about are on the antifreeze circulation side, virtually any material will work for a reducer. I would use brass as it is cheaper and will not corrode in antifreeze.

As psneeld notes above, many boats let too much coolant circulate through the water heater so a smaller connection might even be better. At worst it will take a little longer to heat the water up with the engine.
