and, speaking of dumb questions, does anyone know of an adjustable, swing arm iPad mount that can be permanently mounted near the helm? I had the perfect one on my previous boat but it went with the boat.

I bought a ScanStrut ROKK from Defender.

Check out RAM Mounts - multiple configurations and customizing. I use a suction cup system for my 10" Ipad but there are a multitude of mounting options.

I don’t need any mount.
I put the i-pad in-between the chartplotter and the radar indicator vertically the long way fore and aft. Plug in a charging chord to the cigarette lighter and the pad.

Underway the pad rides along and never moves from it’s perch unless I want to use it. When I want to see around the upcoming point I pull out the pad and surf away. Usually I’m surfing quite far up ahead looking for anchorages. Much of it is just for fun to pass the time at the helm. But I hold the pad on my lap and have no need for a “holder”.

iPad holder.

From amazon the first two I ordered were crap, so I spent an extra $10.00 this one works great for my application I also added a power source close by.

Google Tackform mounts.
The most robust built and best value for the$

I bought a Lifeproof waterproof case on EBay. That can be attached to ram mounts on helm and bridge. I keep all manuals on the ipad along with nav and weather apps so ipad might end up in ER, getting dropped etc.

Between Arkon and RAM you should be able to come up with a solution that works best. The have a ton of different components, allowing for all kinds of combinations. I've used both for many phones/tablets over the years. Many of the pieces have gotten re-used in new setups.

But as to 'swing arm' you're going to have more challenges. As you put more weight out on an arm you run into problems with vibration and pendulum motions. It's one thing to have a desk or wall-mounted arm at home or in, say, a doctor's office. Those can easily be swung in/out of the way. But those won't work on a boat because you need to have a way to secure them, SOLIDLY, at both the stowed and in-use positions. This leads to a lot of 'fiddly bits' being tightened/loosened all the time. Which leads to wear on the parts, which makes them loosen over time, which causes the mount to vibrate, making the screen hard to read (and further wearing the plastic bits).

So it's one thing to have a mount, but swing arm? I've not yet found one up to the task.

I'll add another manufacturer, PIVOT. https://pivotcase.com/

We use them at work (airline cockpit) and they are by far the most robust case I've ever had, their mounting solutions are a bit cheaper than ram and it's pretty quick to connect and disconnect.

I have the following on my current boat...: https://www.flyboys.com/pv-717-06.html

Dan: Your boat goes slow! That iPod will hardly move. Lol

Moves only when I want and I loosen the holding screws. That is the object.

No, I meant that many of the TF guys are traveling at hull speed. Just place the tablet on the helm and it wont go anywhere. Lol. Just kidding

Speaking of mounts, not sure about iPads but I’ve been using these wireless magnetic chargers on my iPhone and they are soooo cool. Charges inductively and phone sticks on the magnet, super convenient and easy. Anyway, not totally OT.

...but I’ve been using these wireless magnetic chargers....
I've been using wireless chargers for nearly a decade now on various Android phones and tablets. I'm partial to avoiding the kind the require adding a plate to the phone. As those tend to interfere with cases, which in turn interferes with reliable wireless charging. iOttie's brand of cradles has always worked for our phones.

The Apple is built in though, and the metal ring is very thin, goes inside my rubber case and I don’t even notice it.

It's 'built in' to any phone that's had wireless charging for nearly a decade. Apple just finally got around to adopting what others having been enjoying for years.

While you may not notice it, any distance you add between the charging coils inside the phone and those on the charging pad will affect the rate at which it provides power. There's definitely some leeway, but big cases or ones with stuff on the back will often reduce the chance of getting a good wireless charging connection.

Well exCUSE me! I wouldn’t know what android phones have had for “nearly a decade” because I won’t use one of those junky pieces of crap.
The ring thing is what makes it magnetic which is key to the convenience factor for me.

Android is crap? So, why is it that Apple has a smaller share of the world-wide market. I guess there must be a lot of fools out there spending half as much for equal performance and equal durability with more advanced features sooner rather than later. There is nothing that an over-priced Apple can do that an Android cannot do.

Although I have an iPhone 8, I have to agree with the above post. I've had my share of problems with the iPhone.

So, why the hate? Just because there's something out there you haven't used and don't understand you feel the need to lash out with that? Please, stop.

You’re a little sensitive about your cell phone use. I’ve used both, and prefer apple. Of the people I know that have tried both, most return to apple. But since I don’t have to communicate with you, I don’t really care what you prefer. I’m just trolling because I could tell by your tone you were “one of those” lol

I totally agree with your "Please stop."
We all want something just a little different. IF that were not be true, we'd all be driving a Studebaker.

A Poort enclosure has a largely open back that often allows it to sit over gauges, and it remains portable for the same duty on the bridge or at other stations.

Mount for IPad....or anything else

Sea Sucker
AppleMount.com
Holds incredibly well. Moveable. Can use with any device....anywhere

I used a couple different RAM mount solutions in my plane, and then the one I used in my (former) cruiser was rock solid even slapping around in narrow fetch. Currently have one in my SUV for my phone. Can’t say enough good things about them.
