NL 643 Water Pump removal

So I noticed my water pump was leaking, probably it's the original unit from 1988.

I ordered a new one, and removed the two bolts on the old one.

Is there something else holding it in? I gave it a couple of whacks with the rubber hammer then escalated to a 22 oz framing hammer (albeit softly).

Being of right mind, I held up on a possible disaster, stopped hammering, and am asking any gurus out there.

Removal tricks?

You have to take the four bolts out that hold the next adapter plate to timing cover. The plate the two bolts screw into. Two go through the timing cover to the oil fill thingy opposite the pump.

The gear on the pump shaft prevents it from coming out that way.

Hope you did not hammer on it!!

Between your help and a description of the process by some guy who did the same thing (without the hammer) on a sailboat I was able to see what I had to do. Two from the back, and two from the front.

The shaft is pitted and the seals sort of fell apart. Gonna take more than Marine-Tex and 5200.

That cast piece that holds the oil fill needed a little cleaning up and I used a small sandblaster rig. Wow, I need one of those at home! Just need some rattle can paint and it’ll be the prettiest thing on the gen-set

So everything is ready for reassembly. Just looking at how this is put together, should I be putting a little permatex no. 2 on the ends of the bolts to prevent any oil seepage, or am I overthinking this?

And is there a technical or service manual for this unit (nothing on line)
