I’m looking for a Cummins 6BT or 6BTA 210 to 330 hp with verifiable history. (One from a storm damaged boat,etc)
Thought someone here might know of one for sale somewhere.

If you strike out on a used engine, Cummins Recon engines are sold with a new-engine warranty at much less than new-engine prices. I installed these and have been happy with them.
 
What kind of pricing are you looking at on a recon . . . What model and HP? Thanks

I’ve priced a recon and that’s probably the route I’ll end up going unless I run across a later model engine that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I’m not going to buy just any used engine. I’ve got a single screw Trawler, so reliability is very important.

I priced a 6BT-210 at about $24,000 out the door
 
I would be interested if injectors pump and turbo would be all that’s needed to make the engine a 6BT-210hp. I wouldn’t be surprised if the pistons and cam are different tho.
 
I just pm'd alabama boater, hopefully he can weigh in on the subject. I'm just a fan boy of cummins, so I can't speak with any authority...
 
I found this on boatdiesel, it suggests the na needs at least pistons.


Adding a turbo is the easy part-- But taking advantage of what it could do will not be practical as you would be changing pistons, injector and injection pump setting, and many other things.............to convert your 6B to a typical 6bt 210-CPL 742 is not something you want to dwell on, trust me on that......

6B to 6BT

I did a little research into the differences between the 6B and 6BT Cummins. It has been a few years!! I have both the marine and construction Cummins parts catalogs. The parts are sequenced by the CPL #. The marine 6B is a CPL714 and the 6BT is CPL742.

If not mentioned below, the internal parts are the same. The differences in the engines are fuel injection pump … both are CAV / DPA units with different fuel delivery profiles ... interchangeable as to mounting. The injector bodies are the same but have different delivery nozzles. They can be reman’d into either. The std pistons for the 6B are 17.3 compression and the 742 are 17.5.
(I find this odd as most turbo engine use less compression but either are so lightly stressed that it may be more for combustion efficiency) The last item is std rear mount turbo and associated plumbing.

The 6B in question was originally from a pair of CG take out engines from Norfolk, VA. When I rebuilt them, the 17.5 piston sets were used as my original intent was to do the 6B to 6BT upgrade for a diesel conversion into a Tiara 36 Open. I ended up with a Tiara 37 with 3208 Cats. The engines were sold but I still have the major 6BT conversion parts … injection pump and turbo.
 
If the internal parts are correct for a 6BT I may very well be interested. I’ll talk with Alabama Boater and get a little more information about the engine and get back with you.
