Hi everyone... new here.

I'm about to take a drive to check out a 34 LRC. I really appreciate the article posted with the performance chart on the sticky:thumb:. After closer inspection though, I realize that the engines tested were the ST 6.354.4M Perkins. Does anyone know if the T6.354 engines will still get the 34 on plane and have similar fuel economies? Any insight as to where I can find a performance chart specific to this boat and the T6.354?

Thanks for any help!

The .4M engine in the article referenced is the 200 HP engine. What is the HP of the boat you'll be looking at? Got a link to the listing?

The naturally aspirated engines will not plane the 34 Californian. The 140 HP Fiat powered version will also not plane. The 200 HP engines will definitely plane.
From an owner of a 34' Californian for 17 years.

Welcome to both of you's guys. Two first posters in one short thread!

Happy to have you both aboard!

It says 185hp. It lists the cruise speed as 8 and the max as 12. These are the numbers I'd expect from the smaller naturally aspirated engines, but I was under the impression that the 'T' in the Perkins number is for turbo.

Hey FlyWright... you warned another member back on May 28th of 2013 with this message:

Also, not a show stopper, but did you see this?

"Disclaimer
Pre 1993 fire aboard vessel lead to all electrical components being rebuilt or replaced from the bilge up in 1993. Primary engines overhauled '98. Fuel and Water tanks replaced and increased in size: fuel from 250-300; water 75-100. Standard wood support for cabin sole replaced with custom aluminum."

Just noticed that the specs for this boat are the same... overhauled '98, 300 gallon fuel, etc.... what are the odds? Must be the same boat, huh?

Interesting! I just found the thread here... http://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s24/34-lrc-californian-questions-10338.html The Yachtworld link on that old thread is expired.

It does have what looks like aluminum floor supports in the ER. Tank capacities match and are each different from the original volumes. Maybe Bshillam is around to tell you if it's the same boat.

The 8 kt/12 kt cruise/WOT speeds seem very close to mine with twin 85HP Perkins. I cruise at 7.5 kt and WOT is 10.5 kt. 12 Kts is not fast enough to plane.

So, that's with the twin 4 cylinder Perkins? Wouldn't you imagine that twin turbo sixes would get it on step? I'm not sure what the difference is between the 185hp turbo and the 200hp turbo, but who would pick that option from the factory if it didn't plane out?

I've emailed the broker about the planing ability and also asked if it's the same 34 LRC with the repaired fire damage.

Thanks for your help, by the way.

I got the 8-12K speed from the listing. If anything, I'd expect them to exaggerate the speeds, not diminish them.

No telling what engines were in there before the 1990's...

Maybe it's got a dirty bottom or miss-matched gears and/or wheels.
Maybe it's the same burned boat that got different engines slapped into it on the cheap.
Maybe they're running pullouts from someone else and not at their peak performance.

Hard to tell from this distance but the possibilities are almost endless.

I have the 200 HP ST6.354M engines in my 34 LRC and I top out between 14 and 16 knots depending on how the boat is loaded. That is at full rated speed of 2400 rpm. 2400 is the one hour rating and I think 2250 is continuous. So 12 knots does not seem too far off to me for the 185 version.

keep in mind the boat advertised holds an additional 100 gallons of fuel than stock. Thats an extra 800 pounds roughly. I have the full enclosure up top that I am sure affects performance too.
