Alternator Question

Hi - I am planning out an alternator upgrade project (new higher output, external reg etc.). Currently I have just standard Delco 2 wire. My + output runs through the cylinder mounted below the alternator. Any idea what this is? Old regulator?

Probably some kind of noise filter. PO probably had some noise in the radios, radar, tv. Looks like a add on. Do you need it? Probably not with a newer alternator. Looks like the basic GM alternator. The brushes on slip rings sometimes make electrical noise.
