Recently received a renewal notice from the USCG. Unfortunately, I replied too soon. So while my current documentation expires in December of this year, my renewal only extends to October 2019. Being responsive cost me two months!:banghead::banghead:
 
OTOH, if you wish to change the time of year when doc renews, renewing early can do that.

I chose to do that so that my doc renewal now comes during the winter, when I am at home, rather than in midsummer, when I am out in the wilds. Cost me only a few bucks.
 
From the USCG site...

"CODs renewed more than 60 days prior to expiration will be issued with a new issue/expiration date, shortening validity period of document. CODs renewed 60 days or less from expiration will maintain the same expiration month."

At $26/year, you probably didn't lose more than $5.
