We are closing in on our trip to Lake Champlain this summer in mid August on a Mainship 430 Aft Cabin Trawler. We will be departing from Waterford and plan to make Whitehall in the first day. Our bimini air height is 16’8”. We have heard that at some locks you can’t tie up to the wall overnight in the event we can’t get to Whitehall from Waterford. We are looking for recommendations of where to explore on Lake Champlain and any nuances concerning the locks. We are experienced Eire Canal lockers, just don’t know of the Champlain Canal locks have any special requirements. We are dialed in to the NYS Canals web site.

We are currently 20 miles south of Troy on the Hudson and have local experience on Lake Erie, Niagara River, Hudson River and LI Sound.

We’re looking forward to the experience.

What are your favorite places on Lake Champlain? Any recommendations?

Jim

Anchoring requires lots of line , the lake is deep!

It was a long time ago but it still makes me smile thinking of it. The Champlain canal locks look pretty much like the first Erie and Oswego locks. There is one with a height restriction but that depends on which end of the lock you tie up. Ft. Edwards has a nice wall and a great restaurant just be sure you can make it under the bridge.

At the bottom of the lake is Chipman's Point marina. Swell folks. Lively political discussion on the steps every night. Can't imagine what it is like now. We stayed on the NY side and it was nice. Try the Vermont side and let us know for next year.

Lake Champlain

there are dozens and dozens of places to anchor in Lake Champlain, too numerous to mention. You'll have a great time.

Been through a number of times, made it end to end in the locks each time, not to say you have too. We stayed at lock 13 marina and also easy walk into town. We need 18' of clearance and never had an issue.

The lake itself can get windy, so if anchoring plan on sheltered land for your location.

Enjoy!
