Moderators, if this is in the wrong place, please move as appropriate.

I have a 1978 Marine Trader with chain steering. Does anyone know the size/type of chain. Also need a source.

There is a section of chain in the lazerette that is out of sight that has not been oiled. Now rusted and in need of replacement.

Thanks, Arch

Greetings,
Any shop that sells bearings should have chain in stock. That being said, your chain may be metric and you might have to go offshore to get it although you may have some luck with motorcycle shops that deal with foreign makes.

Notes on Sprockets and Chains

EDIT: Just had another thought. IF your MT is anything like ours, you should have easy access to the steering gear immediately behind/in front of the lower station. Perhaps remove a piece of chain from THAT location to take to the store to match up.

Regarding Mr. GH's suggestion. Yup, that would work but if the aft chain is difficult to get to and you're going to remove it, I would suggest replacement. Steering is pretty critical.

Soak the rusty chain in some Spotless Stainless cleaner. When it becomes rust-free, use some WD-40 to limber it up. May be just fine then.
