what jobs is it particularly good for? bad for?
 
I use it in the spring to clean the grime and algae off the top boat deck and the foredeck. Fibreglass surfaces only. Others on the forum have used it as well.

OP, thank you so much! I use this product all the time, but was thinking of using outdoor bleach instead. The 30 second stuff works well, but its almost $13 a gallon at my local Ace Hardware. And I can easily go through 4 gallons around the house.

I use it to clean green and black mold off my pool cage, sidewalks, and concrete pavers. Spray on with a pump sprayer, keep wet, hose it off in 30 minutes. No scrubbing.

I am going to try your formula tomorrow, thanks again!
 
The TSP dishwasher soaps work well and are sold in areas that ban TSP for other purposes.

Tsp may reduce the shine of some paints , but its great as a pre paint cleaner.

It will reduce the shine of paint. It's often used to prepare old paint to accept new paint.

The basic rule of cleaning is to use the least aggressive product that will do the job. Don't use a sledgehammer to fix a wristwatch.

I would only use TSP or similar products on my boat if nothing else worked. And while bleach will whiten organic stains, it doesn't really clean. You wouldn't use bleach but no detergent to wash a load of laundry would you?

"Awesome" from dollar stores, is an inexpensive cleaner that works well. "Marine Spray Nine" is more expensive but cleans well and disinfects. "Dawn" dishwashing soap is also good.

I wouldn't add chlorine bleach to any cleaning product before studying the label. Chlorine can react with some products to produce a deadly gas.
 
OP, Question. On the original 30 Second product, I dilute it 50% with water. Do I do the same on the "homemade" solution? Or, just use the "homemade" full strength?\

And, yeah, I wouldn't use this on my fiberglass boat or vinyl. But it works great on concrete, vinyl siding, soffits, pool cages, etc.
 
I honestly don't think where I live (Wakulla county, FL) would be habitable for humans without bleach. Our combination of high temps, very high humidity, a super high water table (a 12" deep hole in the ground fills with water in an hour or so) and thick, jungle like vegetation means that mold very quickly grows on everything. I have to bleach the vinyl siding of our house every other month. Boats left in the marina turn dirty green in a few weeks. Even cars get moldy.

I'll try adding TSP for certain things, like the pavers and screens. Thanks for the tip.

Oh yeah, I agree, use the lowest concentrate that works. I like usine a hose end sprayer.

I’m using spray nine right now to try to get our flybridge cushions clean. It’s working ok. I’m pretty sure 409 is the same stuff.
Our swim platform is pretty yuck...I’m thinking it’s going to need something more powerful and stronger and some good old fashioned scrubbing.

We picked up some non skid deck cleaner while shopping at WM the other day. It claims to have some sort of protectant in it to keep dirt from getting all imbedded. Think that really works or helps?

I've used it to wash walls to degrease/clean in preparation for a new coat of paint in a dirt house. I've also used TSP in ER detailing. It IS a great degreaser and probably more eco-friendly than a petroleum based degreaser for my purposes. This post has been edited AFTER I read Mr. OD's post below.

TSP is a bit harsh.
Start with Dawn, water foul like it.
Start with a medium brush, see what the results are.
If you are not happy, go up a color in stiffness.

If the deck cleaner is the StarBrite with PTEF, I have used it for years and yes, it really works.
 
Barkeepers friend disolved in spray bottle or sprinkled about.

Removes everything.. Including wax and will bleach/brighten teak.

I find it particularly useful on rust stains/hull stains. Spray on, rinse off.

One of many things I like about the American Tug is, NO exterior teak!!!
I had my fill of exterior teak with my Nordhavn

It was the only thing that we found that would get rid of the stains from the ash falls from the forest fires last summer/fall.
