Hello All,

Not looking to stir the pot or get opinions on "best" anchor just looking to compile some data for my own decision making process. It would be much appreciated if you could please supply the following data. Mine is as follows:

Boat Make/model: 1995 Ocean Alexander 456+3
Boat Length: 48'
Est. Gross cruising weight: 50,000+
Anchor make/type: Original Bruce
Anchor weight: 44 lbs
Amount of chain rode: All chain (250'??)

Boat Length: 42'
Est. Gross cruising weight: 30,000+
Anchor make/type: SuperMAX (pivoting) - Primary
Anchor weight: ~50 lbs
Amount of chain rode: 25' (+ 300' 8-plait rope)

Boat Length: 42'
Est. Gross cruising weight: 30,000+
Anchor make/type: Fortress FX37 - Secondary
Anchor weight: ~21 lbs
Amount of chain rode: 6' (+ 250' 3-strand rope)

How does that help?

FWIW, our most common cruising grounds usually present a mud, often soft mud, sometimes soupy ooze mud... so our anchors and rodes are optimized (I hope) for that.

Also, we only have one electric windlass, so that influences the weight of the secondary anchor. In fact, even the weight of the primary anchor is partially limited by my decision to not use an anchor I can't lift manually (should the windlass crap out).

Boat Make/model: Monk 36
Boat Length: 36'
Est. Gross cruising weight: ~20,000
Anchor make/type: Rocna Vulcan
Anchor weight: 20 Kg/44 lbs
Amount of chain rode: All chain (105')

Maerin is 43 ft. waterline
is 52,000 lbs in the slings with half fuel and water.
About another 4,0000 lb. full tanks
Anchor is 40kg Rocna, 400 ft 1/2" BBB chain
The Rocna was the best money ever spent on the boat.

Wow, 1/2", that is a lot of chain weight! Your anchor is secondary:D

Boat is 44,000 lbs “empty.” I went up two sizes over recommendation to a Manson 80 lb, figuring full fuel and water alone would increase the weight by almost 10,000 lbs.

300’ of 3/8” G4 chain.

100,000 pound boat, 110 pound bruce knock off, with 440' of all chain rode. Never have had a problem, even in winds 40 knot sustained, gusting to 50.

150 lb forfjord main anchor
400' 3/8 chain
Fortress fx-57 spare

60' boat
~65,000 lbs loaded

I had a Danforth anchor that supposedly was plenty big for the boat but found it difficult to set in the river when the bottom was river rock (smooth rocks) and near impossible to set when over a river bottom full of grasses.

I went to an 88lb Delta Fast Set plow anchor. Sets first time, every time.

Boat 50', 52,000 lbs.

Anchor 85 lb Mantus, 260' chain, 200' line.

Originally the boat came with an 88 lb Bruce but it dragged a few times in a blow. Never had an issue once I updated to the Mantus.

Hi Lynn !
As a famous sailor/ motorboater 4 revs round the world (2.5 in sailboat, 1,5 in motorboat)once sad: ”when poeple start laugh at you in the harbor becuse of your big anchor, you are very close”
He ment you can never get to big.
I have 40 kg Delta on my Mainship 400 here in Scandinavia and I’m happy about it.
Good luck !

Boat - 30foot, 14000 lbs
36 lb Marsh stockless type anchor.
100 feet 5/16" chain; 200 feet line.

The boat originally came with a 30 pound CQR, but it wasn't designed for weedy limestone bottoms. I may use it if I ever anchor in mud.

Interesting AusCan,
Got a picture of that Marsh Stockless?

As you can see they don’t have a wide fluke so they wouldn’t do well in soft mud. They still hold well in sand around here as the limestone is often just below.
