Older Fuel/Water Tank Gauges

Hi, my boat has what I think are original guagues on the water and fuel tanks. Today they don’t seem to work but I’m wondering if anyone has any experience/advice with retrofitting or repairing older gauges.
Getting the into into n2k is a plus but not that important.

Do you have sight tubes on the tanks? A working gauge is one thing, an accurate gauge another. A level calibrated sight tube allows you to know resultant volume exactly as many tanks are not perfect cubes.

Virtually all older level gauges read level ( providing misleading volume) only. A digital gauge can be calibrated for variable volume as level changes, with the sight tubes or accurate tank design specs being the starting point.

For vessels with hull bottom integrated tanks the volume measuring options change.

Those sending units pop right out and can be easily replaced. They sense magnetically right through the aluminum case so you never even open up into the fuel area. just remove the two smallest screws.

If the senders are your issues.

I do on the fuel system so don’t worry too much on that, I’m blind in terms of water. Water Tanks are stainless mounted under the master stateroom floor.
Fuel are steel but were recently inspected and in perfect condition.

Thanks Duvie! Super helpful. I’ll likely try just a swap on the water tanks first, I’m less worried about accuracy as it’s more a question on if/when I need to flip on the soon to be purchased water maker.

IF Swiss accuracy is not required the Hart Tank Tender is a low cost non electric simple refit.

I've replaced fuel tank level gauges; used CruzPro digital. Happened to have also replaced the senders (used WEMA senders), but the CruzPro gauges would likely have synced with whatever senders we happened to have. (If you decide to go the CruzPro route, ask again I'll I'll add more commentary about which gauges might work best. They have very good customer service, BTW.)

I've also replaced freshwater and holding tank sensors, also both with WEMA units. Didn't need to replace the gauges, but could have, also with CruzPro.

And I replaced the coolant temperature gauges, also with CruzPro. Easy.

All those just used existing wiring, BTW.

Only voltmeters and oil pressure left to go, to finish my whole long-term project.
