KK42 A/C Advice

Any suggestions as to where I should park my 16btu a/c? Daydream had no A/C so I’m retrofitting. Obviously there are three possibles... pilothouse under dash port side.... under pilothouse settee and under galley counter stbd side. Location that gives best bang for buck? Yeah I know, I should have bought 2 smaller units for even distribution... but hey “new ECD-16” off craigslist for next to nothing can’t be beat.

Ease of install seems to be the under galley counter option.

Originally your boat had a 16k under galley for salon and galley, and a 16k in under pilothouse dash for staterooms and pilothouse. At least that was how mine was set up to facilitate easy ductwork.

The 16k in for salon was replaced with a 16k, seems about right, I believe a 12k would be too small (Baltimore summer, then Caribbean)

The pilothouse A/C was a horrible design and no vents in either head. I installed a 9k under master stateroom berth for all staterooms and heads. I have an air cooled unit for wheelhouse (long story), but a small water cooled under bench will be in the future for me.

The ductwork and condenser hoses are the hard part. Don’t skimp on size, or performance will suffer. Flex duct also kills a lot of cfm.

Hmmm looks like another unit will be needed. I’ve got one 16 I think I’ll plug into the galley location for now. Can you (or anyone) send me a pic or two of the galley location ducting?

Limited internet here in Antigua (expensive). So no pics but...the retun is cut in lower stbd corner of galley counter wall. The supply comes up and 90 degree into top corner under counter and runs to port entire length. Diffusers cut in top behind sink, and on salon side galley wall port and starboard of sink, and at end of duct on port side galley wall to corner.

Make sense?

Yep... I’ve got a sliding access panel to the a/c mounting location. I figure an intake mounted to that access panel sufficient for supply of intake Air to unit. Discharge: construct a column directly above unit with vents facing sink on one side and salon on the other.... maybe additional ducting up into upper galley storage (over sink) discharging to vents along way?

The column seems to be standard in KK42s with factory a/c.

We installed 2-16k BTU units when we got to Mexico. Hobo was a PNW boat so it didn’t have any. In the Florida heat they seemed to be sized right. The one under the pilot dash has ducks for the pilot house the master and guest staterooms. The one under the pilot house berth has a duck for the pilot house and galley/salon. At night in the summer, we only run the one under the pilot house.

You absolutely need 2 16,000 btu units. You will thank yourself later.

The first 4 are from the pilot dash unit. I had to mount a platform since the floor wasn't level. Careful drilling through the ceiling for the staterooms ducts. I found an AC feed.

The last 2 are the pilot house berth unit. I cut an access then added cleats. You can see the grate in the upper left. That's the return and draws air area from the refrigeration compartment.

Thanks Larry... that’s EXACTLY what I was looking for....I can see I’m going to have to climb under my dash and put some paint down first. Yours looks pristine.

My next query is where the water feed lines (and drains) are routed for dash unit. I’m guessing inside master hanging locker? Same question for under pilothouse berth.....

Yes, the master hanging locker for the pilot house water lines.

The pilot house berth lines come up through the locker in the head. I had to build out an enclosure on the upper left wall to hide them.

The drain thru hulls are under that head’s sink. They’re above the water line so you can do it whil you’re in the water.
