Hello Everyone,
This is my first posting on this sight. The amount of information available from the members is amazing and extremely helpful. I recently sold my Carver 1997 325 aft cabin and purchased a brand new Ranger Tug CB31 to be delivered Spring of 2018. I have been boating all my life in the Great Lakes region and wanted a boat that I could travel greater distances more economically and safely. I would appreciate it if there are fellow Ranger Tug owners who might weigh in with their thoughts.

Welcome to TF!

We kept our previous trawler south of Frankfort. Miss the Great Lakes and might go back soon.

I believe there is a Ranger Tug owner's group somewhere on the Internet. Search for it.

I don't own one but they seem to be very nice boats.
 
Welcome Marnis! Hey just wanted you to know you probably could have posted this in a different place in TF.
If you click under "Trawler Builder Forums", then its alphabetical so go down to "Tug Designs". That section includes all tug designs including Ranger Tug.

A new build is very exciting so congratulations! Keep TF in the loop and we love to see pics as a build comes along...

No worries. Moved at no charge. Merry Christmas...and congrats on the new build!
 
They are nice looking boats but most new boats are.
I like their interiors and most layouts.
But what will they do that an old Bayliner won't at 1/50th the cost?

Hope you can get up to the North Channel with your new boat. Please keep us posted along your journey.

A new boat will normally be much more reliable than a 30 year old boat. It will need fewer repairs and will not have a dated, worn out interior (or exterior).

A Ranger Tug is much more of a "high end" boat than a Bayliner ever was.
 
Indeed you’re totally correct.

However an old boat can be made nice and very dependable for a small fraction of the cost of a new boat. And what it can do is usually almost the same.

I big and valid argument against buying the old Bayliner is that to achieve the low fuel consumption of the diesel powered Ranger the old Bayliner would need to be repowered. And that’s not cheap.

As to “high end” the Bayliner is/was probably just as good in quality as the Ranger. There has been several threads about Bayliner quality in the past. Have a look.
 
By "high end", I meant not only quality but fit and finish and features. These differences may not be a concern for everyone but they are for some.

It's true the 30 year old Bayliner (in good condition) will get you from point "A" to point "B" but the Ranger Tug will get you there in style.
 
Twice we have been in harbors where a TugNuts rendevouz was occurring. This year at Roche Harbor and three years ago in Nanaimo. In both cases more than 50 Tugs were in attendance with close to 100 at Roche.

Their following is passionate. I've seen many in Alaska with the owners staying on them for months on end. These boats are by sheer numbers the most popular trawler out there. After being on several and talking with the owners it is easy to grasp their popularity. I don't view them as a niche vessel, more a main streamer.

If one is wondering where the trawler market went, look no further.

Not fall to pieces and look amazing.

I don't know how they perform but there's one at my marina that I always stare at(more than any other boat as a matter of fact).

Isn't that enough?

Yup they still take plenty of funding but they are getting more available all the time.

We moved from a 1978 Mainship 34 to a 38 Bayliner a while back and then stayed with Bayliner. Seems we share the same likes....
 
Marnis: Congrats on the new rig. Yes, I agree that you should get to the TugNuts website asap. Those folks are very passionate about their Ranger's.

Hopefully you didn't pay any attention to the post on this thread about buying a similar boat for 1/50th of the price. Maybe they wish they could have your beautiful new 31' Ranger!

Totally agree. The Ranger Tuggers are a super passionate group of guys. Very similar to C Dory folks. The C Dory rendezvous in the PNW and Cali. get huge turnouts as well.

(interesting side note, both websites are run by the same guy.)
