The Coast Guard Barque Eagle will leave Baltimore April 26th bound for New London to commence the 2017 cadet summer training program. Eagle and her crew have been at the Coast Guard Yard facility in Baltimore as part of a Service Life Extension Project that will keep the ship away from its home port of New London, Connecticut, for several years.
Eagle, also known as “America’s Tall Ship” is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only square-rigger in U.S. government service. The ship was built in 1936 in Germany, and commissioned as Horst Wessel, one of three sail training ships operated by the pre-World War II German navy. At the close of World War II, Horst Wessel was taken as a war reparation by the United States, recommissioned as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle and sailed to New London, Connecticut. Eagle provides an unparalleled at-sea leadership and professional development experience for future officers of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Specific port call dates are:
*
* May 29: Port Canaveral, Florida*– Passenger Transfer*

* May 31: Arrive Port Canaveral, Florida*

It was outside the Mayport inlet when we walked the beach this morning. Probably waiting for the tide to go up to Jax.

I wouldn't have figured it could make it to Canaveral in a day! Perhaps a different one?

I just looked at her schedule on line. She was due in PC yesterday and there until the 4th. So unless something changed it must have been another tall ship. In fact the one we saw had four masts where I think the Eagle has three?

We actually had the chance to go aboard during a tall ships event in Jax back in 2004.

We had dinner aboard Eagle back in 2002. Pretty neat.

USCG Eagle

She was in Portland this weekend. My wife and I had the pleasure of walking her deck...

The USS Constitution is still officially in service in the US Navy.
